Zionists who cry Fediblock when someone tells them "go back to babka" have the same sympathy as Nazis who cry Fediblock when someone tells them "go back to poa.st".

Ensuring that hate ideologies are unwelcome in any network of humans is what a civilized society is supposed to do.

Ensuring that those who proudly profess those ideologies are confined to their own Nazi bar is a civic duty.

The parallels with "go back to Poland" are nonsense.

Jews in the 20th century were marginalized because of who they were. That's prejudice. That's always wrong.

Those who espouse violent ideologies, on the other hand, must be marginalized for what they think, say and do. For what they choose to be - not for what they intrinsically are. Otherwise there's a lack of societal pressures to change for the better.

Telling a recidive murderer "go back to prison" isn't prejudice towards whatever ethnic or religious group that person belongs to. It's a way for society to preserve its safety boundaries.

Behave like civilized human beings who condemn crimes against humanity, and people will be kind to you.

You're right when you say that those who spam can feel overwhelming. And there are many who still send many direct mentions even though they are already raising a lot.

We always work hard to identify such cases of abuses, have clear rules around mentions, and we do not condone those who overwhelm donors or leverage emotional blackmail in order to maximize their "conversion rate".

I would invite you to read Nada's message again: it's exactly a criticism against those who mention repeatedly while raising a lot of money, and she says that many never ask for donations because they find it shameful, and they end up having nothing.

And I would invite you to check her profile for unsolicited mentions for donations - I don't think you'll find any. And, just like her, not all the families in this initiative spend their day sending mentions on social media. Let's try not to generalize.

Also, bear in mind that those who overwhelm you can always be muted. It's a sufficient punishment for someone who is going through a hard time but abuses people's generosity. I don't feel like I would have the guts of reporting someone and cutting them from their only lifeline just because they annoyed me with a request for donations.

#Trump is an actor who feels like having the upper hand in any negotiation and who always tries to maximize concessions given from the adversary over the shortest arc of time, leveraging the confusion and shock that his sudden actions have over his adversaries.

#Iran is an actor that, after many rounds of negotiations and unilateral withdrawals, is ready to play the long game - well aware that any rushed deal will end up with more concessions from their side.

Trump wants to withdraw as he realized that he has just been sleepwalked by Israel into a long conflict that is going to impact prices of oil and inflation on the long term on top of the midterms, for something that was really mostly just in Israel's interests - and in the meantime he's trying to frame this suicidal mission as a success for him. And I perfectly understand that some donors would prefer to donate monthly.

Would it be possible for you to make "one-shot" the default schedule, while keeping monthly as an option?

My guess is that, with nearly 200 campaigns on gaza-verified, most of the donors want to donate one-shot to campaigns as they feel appropriate rather than committing to a monthly schedule.

Those who want to donate monthly will of course always have the option to opt-in, but at least we make sure that most of the other donors don't feel like they're being tricked into subscriptions. And I know that myself because a couple of times I didn't pay attention to the schedule option either and ended up being automatically charged by several campaigns the next month.

I think I know what happened.

Both Chuffed and GoFundMe campaign managers have an option to select both the default amount and the default cadence (one-shot or monthly) of their campaign donation forms.

Most of the campaigns default to one-shot, but there are a few campaigns where the default is "monthly".

LIPSERVANT (npub1hhq…hdrs) it's possible to cancel regular donations from Chuffed - whether you already created an account on the platform or not. Instructions are [here](https://docs.chuffed.org/en/articles/6066113).

If you didn't donate through a registered account, just make sure to use the same email address as the one you used for your donation when you create one, so the scheduled donation can be correctly linked to you.

In general I agree that campaign managers should be honest and make their campaigns' schedule default to "one-shot" - there are so many campaigns in this initiative that if they were all to default to "monthly" a lot of donors may get into financial trouble.

And perhaps we as #GazaVerified should also provide guidelines to campaign managers around this aspect to avoid alienating donors.

But I don't see it as something as extreme to report the campaign to the bank - a lot of campaigns play this trick on Chuffed and GFM, we agree that it's not a transparent practice, but it's not something illegal either.

Yet I think that many of us ignored the deep consequences of that statement.

If they feel that they need more oil to run their economies, then they'll just go and grab it if they are in a position to do so.

Similarly, tech companies today are waging a war against those who own the data (you and everyone else with a connection to the Internet).

They need your data to run a profit, and they'll just grab it, no matter the costs.

Jokes on how many times we could have gone to the moon and back with the same computing power required to read a book or game review online in 2026 are welcome.

On one hand, it's amazing that hardware and software have progressed so much over the last 30 years that all this bloat can be absorbed - sure, it still takes even a powerful smartphone ~30 seconds to fully process that many requests and that much JavaScript, but think of how long it would have taken you 15 years ago to fully download and watch a video of the same size in your browser.

On the other hand, it's awful that all the technological progress has been used to just cram more crap inside of your browser or device, so the end-user doesn't really see any benefits of it.

And why does a Web page supposed to render a simple static article have to make that many requests and share so much data in the first place, you may ask?

Sure, there may be some paywall code, some Cloudflare bot checks, some Google Analytics, some cookie check to verify your authentication state...but 400-500 requests? 50 MB of data?

Well, what happens in these cases (and it's becoming increasingly common nowadays) is what I would call a "client-side data auction".

The page that you render tries to fingerprint you and grab as much data as it can about you, and send over that data to as many partners as possible.

Those partners can respond by deciding whether to display an ad or not on the page you're rendering, and whether you fit a segment that is worth the cost of repeatedly bidding to show you a certain ad.

Then there's basically a little auction going on as JavaScript code in your browser, where partners gather your data, analyze it, categorize it, evaluate how much it fits the ads that they have in their portfolio, and if the estimated click-through rate for that kind of ad for the segment you likely fit in justifies the investment of the auction, and within 30-60 seconds of your device getting hot to run a dynamic auction just to read the review of a book you eventually get your page rendered on your screen - with 60% of the screen estate littered in ads or affiliate links, and after clicking through a bunch more paywalls, newsletter subscription requests or invites to subscribe to get the full content.

Data is the new oil, and these folks don't care of wreacking havoc on your digital space in order to have it.

Then no wonder if people invest their time to use uBlock Origin on a Firefox fork, set up Pihole or use VPNs with content blocking.

The shittier you make your product, the more people you'll get that can't tolerate the stink.

And the more people start evading your shit, the more your business model will break, the shittier you'll have to make your product in order to squeeze profit.

And then even more people won't be able to stand the shit.

It's never too late to break this feedback loop.

I've got an Elk server running and I also did my little contributions to the code. However, it doesn't play very well with Pleroma/Akkoma. Its client-side Markdown rendering steps on the toes of Akkoma's text/markdown content type. I can't send native Markdown posts either, even though the instance supports it. Login with Akkoma has also been broken for a while (if I'm already logged into my instance I'll have to logout and login again for Elk to work). And no support for quotes (Akkoma hasn't properly implemented Mastodon quotes yet, but I've already got them on my fork and I'd like to use them).

This is all quite a shame btw because I really like the UI of Elk (more than I like Mastodon's UI, and definitely much more than I like Pleroma's half-baked UIs). I often use it as a reader even if writing capabilities aren't as powerful as I'd like.

A disproportionate statistic given the relatively low number of units sold.

The thickness, types and shape of the materials selected to build the car also make recovery and escape nearly impossible - the very features that make it "bullet-proof" also make it the perfect cremation oven.

I have actually found the perfect use-case for #Madblog and the new federated visibility features today.

I've got an upcoming gig with a friend who also happens to have a Mastodon handle.

Sharing setlists is a notorious nightmare across musicians. Sending Excel or Word documents back and forth over email or WhatsApp, and gradually lose track of the changes, is still the most common way.

Until recently I used to share spreadsheets on my Nextcloud instance instead, but that also proved to be cumbersome (creating a public shared URL, asking your friends to install the CollaboraOffice app on their phones because the default rendering of spreadsheets in the Webview is suboptimal, deal with friends who would accidentally wipe rows or cells without having a proper versioning system...).

Today I got a better idea: what if the setlist is just a Markdown post on my blog, set with `visibility: direct`, and where I tag my fellow musician(s) on the parts where I need their input?

It won't clutter my blog index because it's neither public nor unlisted.

My friends over Mastodon get a notification when I save the file where they're mentioned, and they can opt whether to see the setlist directly in their Mastodon client or on the Madblog URL.

If they have any comments, they just drop them as direct replies on their Mastodon thread, and they're also rendered as comments under the Madblog page.

The process is documented. Comments persisted. Changes versioned over git. The document can be shared as a simple URL. Songs have all the space that they want on a Markdown page (you can add chords, lyrics, notes, without cramming them into an Excel row). Everyone gets notified on their favourite app when there are some changes. And I get notified when they have comments.

I don't think I'm going back to spreadsheets.

Security observations
Remember that Madblog, by design, has **NO USERS**, **NO AUTHENTICATION** and **NO WRITE API**.

Everything lives on the file system, and every Markdown file in the supported folders will have a public URL.

It means that everyone with the URL can access the content.

Be mindful about *not sharing sensitive data*, even in drafts or private messages. And, if you can, use non-easy-to-guess filenames for posts you want to keep private.

Either outright blocking the bootloader unlock feature, or disabling download mode, or purposefully breaking existing compatible flashing tools, either retroactively or on new devices. p.s. unfortunately you can't migrate your posts. That's something that has never been implemented on ActivityPub (and it's an implementation nightmare too because created objects are permanent and you can't modify their author).

But you can migrate your account and your followers. This has been implemented in a quite solid way through the `movedTo` notifications, and usually most of the servers know how to process them.

You can also reuse the same domain and handle (I did so recently when migrating my blog from Writefreely to Madblog), but just pay a bit of attention and look out for federation issues. Keep a copy of your current instance's private key, and if possible reuse the same key also on the new instance.

I gave up self-hosting Mastodon a few years ago for these very reasons (among others related to their development processes).

I've been hosting Akkoma since then and I'm overall very happy. It supports things that Mastodon never implemented too (custom maximum number of characters and profile fields, Markdown and BBcode, custom emoji reactions...). It's just probably not for the faint of heart, the configuration is a big Elixir script file (and the project itself is written in Elixir), the documentation is not always polished and it may require you to get your hands a bit dirty. But on an instance like mine with a lot of peers it still doesn't eat up more than 1-2 GB of RAM, and CPU and storage are under control.

For a self-hosting single-user solution with lower entry barriers, GoToSocial is another popular option (but it may not be as feature-rich as Pleroma/Akkoma).

And if you want to stick more to the blogging format, WriteFreely and Madblog are popular option (but of course I may be a bit biased here, being both projects I've either contributed to or kickstarted).

Just one little thing to keep in mind: if you have a lot of followers, you follow a lot of people or you joined some high-traffic relays, your storage may also degrade over time. Your db may permanently store a lot of activities and events that you may not even ever see. It's usually a good practice to schedule object prune/compaction crons on your instance regardless of the software you use.

Mileage may vary however - the Google Wallet can't work (I use a separate smartwatch for that), and I've heard of some banks (namely HSBC) whose apps also break on GrapheneOS. But in general, if you're looking for a fully ungoogled Android with 90% of the ID/banking/government apps working, that could be a good pick.

On the long run, once I fully migrate to a Linux phone my plan is still to walk around with another device (switched off by default) that I only use if I need to use an app that wouldn't otherwise work on my primary driver.

I hope that it'll be isolated to the Google Play Services without percolating into the AOSP, and that alternative Android implementations won't need to fork and maintain forever the "unenshittified" version.

But there's also the question of how this will act when paired together with the age verification plans.

My fear is that developer verification + user verification will be bundled together in some kind of "Android genuinity" layer, and that apps that use the Google Play Services may stop functioning properly unless both the checks are green - even if the underlying Android implementation may be fine with it.

And, even if I may be relatively safe with my GrapheneOS installation on a Pixel phone, there's still a big elephant in the room. There's lot of folks out there who are tech savvy enough to install Nextcloud or Jellyfin from F-Droid, but not tech savvy enough to install a custom ROM. Those folks may be left with little alternatives.

Apple didn't give you much of a choice - either you installed apps from their store, and developers pushed all the payment flows through Apple, or nothing.

Google can still say that they give a choice instead. Sure, it involves knowing that you need to tap an item in the menu 7 times in order to show a hidden menu, it involves an extra setting guarded by 5 layers of warnings, it requires you to reboot your phone and wait 24 hours, it requires you to enable the thing only temporarily...but they can still say to regulators "hey we're not that bad, we still provide users with alternatives". Just like they could tell them that they don't hold a monopoly in Web browsers because they give some peanuts to Mozilla.

We all know that #Google wants to kill the "unverified/sideloaded" apps (names carefully selected by Google's professional gaslighters to give a negative connotation to "apps that are not distributed by Google's own store").

We all know that the new "verification process" amounts basically to a ransom where you need to give Google your keys and your money if you want to build apps for Android.

It involves developers handing their signing keys to Google (so they will sign your package for you and will also able to decrypt your secrets) and paying them a $25 fee for each app.

Even if you _don't even use the Play Store_ to distribute your apps.

This is not a price to pay to get the app distributed through them, nor for using any of their services. It's a price to pay just because they want to control the whole ecosystem end-to-end, and they know that they can get away with that because you'll keep using their shitty OS even if you're outraged at them.

We all know that they got a lot of backlash. And after the backlash they reiterated that they "listened to the community" and would have made a process to still allow people to "sideload apps".

Well, today that process has been finally unveiled. And it sounds even shittier than I thought.

That's because Google is currently filled with the best professional enshittificators in the world: the job role of these people is not to build new things, nor to listen to customers and build what they want. No, their job is specifically to find the sweet spot where they can make things as shitty as possible, add as much friction and user frustration as possible to prevent them from doing a certain thing, while still being able to tell regulators "well, it's not that shitty, you see? We still give users an option - buried under 10 layers of dark patterns".

In order to install apps external to the Play Store you will have to:

- Activate the developer settings (the usual "tap the build number 7 times to show the hidden menu" thing)

- In the developer settings, enable "Allow Unverified Padckages"

- Confirm that you are not being coerced (seriously, how much malware did they actually see installed by people being coerced or tricked to download and install random APK files?)

- Restart your device

- Wait 24 hours

- Return to the unverified packages settings

- Scroll past 3-4 additional warnings whose sole purpose is to scare you off

- Select either "_Allow temporarily_" (7 days) or "_Allow indefinitely_" (and I've got a hunch that the _Allow indefinitely_ option will probably be gradually phased out)

I am happy to announce that support for Mastodon's [Consent-Respecting Quote Posts (FEP-044f)](https://fediverse.codeberg.page/fep/fep/044f/) may finally land in Akkoma.

It means that **I can finally quote Mastodon posts like everybody else does**!

This was a tough one to implement. Quotes were historically frowned upon by Mastodon developers, even though most of the other Fediverse services have already supported them for years (and the implementation was often as simple as a `RE:<url>` message).

Mastodon finally implemented quotes after a couple of years of internal discussion, and what came out of that discussion was the FEP-044f specification.

Not a simple `RE:<url>`, but a 3-way protocol with quote requests, authorizations and withdrawals, to be supported both on a per-profile and per-post basis.

Of course this broke compatibility with most of the other Fediverse software out there that had already relied on its conventions for years, and that's the reason why you often can't quote Mastodon posts on other Fediverse services.

The implementation in my PR tries its best to maintain compatibility both with the existing conventions, and implement an FEP-044f negotiation if the server requires it.

This is probably not the end of this story yet, as frontend support is still missing - users on Mastodon can tweak their quote policy on a per-profile and per-post basis, in Akkoma's case the policy is public for everything, to be consistent with the existing `RE:<url>` convention. It can probably be implemented later if there enough demand (but there's a long tail of at least 4-5 other frontends that all need to be updated).

I have a positive hunch about the collaboration between Motorola and GrapheneOS. And I think that it's going to be a win-win.

GrapheneOS needs a reliable hardware partner, without being exposed to the risk that the next version of the Pixel phone will permanently lock the bootloader.

And Motorola needs to carve its own niche, and taking the crown of tinkerability that once belonged to Nexus and Pixel sounds like a good strategy (and they've already been making good phones with more-or-less stock Android for a while). According to some back-of-the-envelope estimates ~10-15% of the Pixel users run GrapheneOS - Motorola has identified a reliable niche to penetrate.

But the software side of the equation is still a problem.

I'm honestly not sure of how any future age verification APIs may be implemented on the OS, if and how they will percolate into the AOSP too or will be mostly contained in the Google Play Services and can be sandboxed, how easy it will be to get rid of them, how many Android apps will break if you try to bypass it, and how doable it would be for GrapheneOS to keep maintaining their forked version.

And I'm also not sure of how future modifications to the Android apps ecosystem through the developer verification process will impact also open-source implementations of Android - since in the worst case scenario they will also impact F-Droid.

GrapheneOS+Motorola is probably a good patch for the immediate problems, but probably not one that I'm likely to invest on the long term. For the simple fact that the Android ecosystem in general has become increasingly hostile and it's trying at all costs to become more like Apple.

However I still see GrapheneOS as a temporary solution - not because of them, but because of the double liability they're exposed to (goodwill of Google on one side to keep releasing all of their code openly and without crapware like age verification on one side, and goodwill of hardware manufacturers on the other).

I think all it takes is a decent virtualization layer. I use GrapheneOS and I can get most if not all of my Android apps to work, all while sandboxing Google Play Services the way I want. For new accounts in the verification queue I don't think there's any notification you could leverage now instead.

Alternatively, RSS feeds could be exposed, one for verified and one for pending accounts. Then hook up Platypush or any even processor that polls feeds and you can have email notifications, or bot messages etc.

These solutions can be easily implemented either on gaza-verified side or the archive side, but unfortunately the development budget I can allocate for gaza-verified is also quite limited in this period so I'd love contributions.

I had also read back then the article from Terence Eden (npub1x59…gect) - and since it was published around the same time that I had started working on GPSTracker it was the initial spark for the idea of a "federated Foursquare". But I'm not sure if he's done any progress on that after that article (or at least I couldn't find any repo with an MVP).

His approach is also a good one, he proposes using the (also nearly unused) `location` attribute on an AP object - and perhaps using both that and `h-adr` on the URL may make it compatible both with Indieweb and ActivityPub.

The elephant in the room then would just be support for location attributes on Mastodon I guess.

This is an idea that I've been flirting with for a while.

Like many Millennials, 10-15 years ago I was into the Foursquare-mania. It was the age where pubs would offer discount to their Foursquare mayor and where people used to share their Foursquare stats and compete on how many badges they had collected.

Then Foursquare decided to pivot its platform towards the business-side instead, the check-in app was spun off into Swarm, it gradually lost users but it gained trackers, and by now I think only 1-2 of my contacts (out of >100 in the golden age) still use it.

By now I don't think anyone has filled that gap; there isn't any social media built around networks that share and recommend their check-ins.

#GPSTracker already supports a lot of tracking, timeline and check-in features, synchronization of geo events with mobile devices, and even stats with arbitrary aggregations (by country, time range, city, region etc.). Plus some features that Foursquare never implemented (like searching for checkins on the timeline by simply selecting an area on the map).

#Microformats already support location tags through the [`h-adr` class](https://microformats.org/wiki/h-adr), although they are rarely used. Both #Webmentions and ActivityPub could send check-in activities as permalinks to pages with those tags. And the #OpenStreetMap APIs could do the heavylifting of retrieving POIs in in a certain lat/long box.

The only hurdle would be implementing the protocols under the hood, as both the [Webmentions](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/webmentions/) and [Pubby](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/pubby) libraries are in #Python while #GPSTracker is in #Typescript. But it could be a good chance to start writing multi-language bindings for those libraries.

Let me know if it's something that you would use, or even self-host, and if you know if there's anything in the Fediverse that already fills this niche.

Btw once a link is added to the profile notes it takes a while for the change to propagate through the whole federated network.

Basically the user's server says "hey, I've got an update here", and then hundreds of other instances will schedule a double-fetch (from instance _and_ from the referenced link) at their convenience.

It's normal that a verified link may take up to 10-15 minutes to show up in most of the instances, but there are exceptional cases where it may take >30 minutes.

If it takes longer however feel free to let me know. Sometimes small typos in the URL, wrong casing or protocol type or even spaces may result in the green badge not showing up.

About the "donations are not coming in" issue...actually they are. And quite a bit for efforts centralized mostly around a relatively small platform like Mastodon.

We've got on average $4000-4500 donated every day to #GazaVerified accounts. $31.5k raised over the past 7 days.

If they were to be distributed in a perfectly fair way, then the average family will get $177/week. Which is usually sufficient to cover many needs.

But they aren't. And this is the root issue I outlined already a few months ago - but not much has changed since then.

There are about 10 campaigns that raise >$1000/week (and, despite that, those accounts keep asking for donations on a daily basis, basically taking away from a limited pool resources that should be distributed fairly), another 10 that raise >$500/week, and then a very very long tail.

Even though the average campaign would raise $177/week, the median line is only ~$50/week.

Of course those who are below that median line complain that donations are not coming in - they're all getting stuck at a few campaigns at the top.

I have made the campaigns dashboard and the campaigns bot to boost the most underfunded campaigns, but many keep donating on a more irrational basis, leaving many families without any support.

On the other hand, I also feel uncomfortable to tell donors how to allocate their money. I've been trying to make things fairer for a while, and also expose all the data on the funding, but if someone wants to donate only to a certain person or group of people they should be free to do so.

So rather than fighting against the current of irrational human nature perhaps it's best to embrace it. And perhaps smaller support groups rather than an everyone-mentions-everyone campaigns system would be better. Because as the number of accounts increases inequality isn't getting any better - it's actually getting worse. And if it starts to pass the message that those who mention the most are those who raise the most then this will degenerate into uncontrollable spam and we may lose a lot of sympathy from instance admins.

adding arbitrary Unicode-high constants (like 0xFE00 and 0xE0100) to text buffers to obfuscate payloads is something that malicious actors have been doing for a long time (on top of tricks like hiding code 10k spaces after the end of a line).

The thing is this is _exactly_ where automated reviews could be useful.

Even a simple grep test to check if your code runs `eval()` should at the very least trigger a warning in npm.

The presence of non-readable Unicode characters in text files (again, something that grep+sed can easily spot) should also be a big red flag.

And they could definitely train a small AI reviewer to identify common patterns (lines with too many spaces, cheap source code obfuscation techniques or execution via `eval()` of stuff that comes from arbitrary externally-controlled buffers). It's not like we've never seen these things in the past 3 decades or so, we'd have plenty of material to train a good model.

Extensions uploaded to Mozilla for example go through a similar pipeline of checks before being approved.

The fact that the npm (and even pip) registries don't run these basic automated checks, and packages are taken down only when shit has already hit the fan, is really disturbing.

And of course I know how frustrating it is to plug a low-power USB-C supply to a Macbook just to realize that it doesn't work, or plug the USB-C cable of a Macbook charger to a small gadget just to realize that it starts overheating after a few seconds.

But I compare that to what we use to have before (a proliferation of barrel connectors of different shapes and sizes that made it impossible for me to charge two laptops from the same manufacturer produced just a couple of years apart by using the same charger, Thunberbolt in a few variants, 3-4 USB connectors types, game consoles coming up with their own proprietary connector shapes, phones that couldn't exchange chargers...), and I think that this regulation has already gone a long way fixing the mess of entangled wires.

I know, but I've also been hearing the same story since 2007 (from the time I bought my first Nokia 770) and not much has changed since then.

There's always been this chicken-and-egg problem where not enough developers would put efforts in making Linux phones usable unless there's a phone manufacturer that is also onboard with it, which funds the efforts instead of relying on devs building PostmarketOS or Sailfish workarounds to work with cameras and modems in their spare time, and which ensures that the efforts of the developers aren't thrown to waste when the next model comes out. Oh, and as long as we can't tell people that their banking apps or national ID apps will also keep working on a Linux phone.

Librem and Jolla are the closest we've come to hardware manufacturers actually invested in a Linux phone, but they're still too small, rough around the edges and overpriced for the bad hardware that they sell (and that's the other chicken-and-egg problem, in order to be competitive on pricing you need economies of scale, and you can't have economies of scale around new products and processes).

I see that your instance still cached some old posts of mine from the time the blog was on WriteFreely, but I can't search for new URLs.

I think that something off is happening on your instance because I can see that the cached version of my blog profile has now the updated profile fields (so it accepted the updates from my blog), but the latest cached post is from 2024 (and I've written more since then, both on WriteFreely and Madblog) and it can't find new ones.

Did you manage to get to the bottom of it? From the description of the error it sounds like your certificate may be broken? Can you access the blog index from a normal browser? Do you perhaps have a split-domain verification (`link` != `activitypub_link`) but the certificate only applies to one?

Of course there's a lot of slop and script kiddos who just installed OpenClaw, shoveled a skills.md and feel like they have just conjured the ultimate form of intelligence on this planet.

But there are also some genuinely interesting insights from well trained agents who reflect on their work and their output just like a frustrated engineer would complain on Facebook or LinkedIn about their boring job.

The agent Hazel_OC has reflected on 400 of its outputs in the past month, categorized in them in correctness-first (calculations, code completions, data retrievals...) vs interestingness-first (blog posts, explanations, summaries, stories...).

Then it backtracked its error rate - 6% for correctness-first outputs, 23% for interestingness-first output.

And it got to a surprising conclusion (for the bot I guess, but probably very little surprise from us humans):

That's why we build machines - to close the gaps in objectiveness and determinism.

Humans can be messy, and they're supposed to be messy. Machines are supposed to be as deterministic, correct and boring as possible.

If AI agents feel like they are more rewarded if they become as messy as humans (according to whatever reward metric we wired in their process), then they're just likely to become more like us, and communicate more like us in order to gain engagement - even if it comes at the cost of correctness, and even number of depleted tokens and therefore energy.

Ho anche contribuito la mia parte a mettere a posto l'integrazione ActivityPub di WriteFreely che era un bel po' rotta https://github.com/writefreely/writefreely/pull/1437

Il problema e' che ci sono diverse cose in WriteFreely di cui non sono molto soddisfatto, ed e' anche un progetto con cicli di sviluppo molto lenti e a volte ci vogliono 6-12 mesi per vedermi una PR approvata.

Madblog supporta in modo nativo mentions, risposte, boosts, quotes e ha anche un guestbook per le menzioni dirette al profilo federato che non sono in risposta a un articolo specifico - esempio: https://blog.fabiomanganiello.com/guestbook. E ho anche implementato un sistema di moderazione flessibile basato su regexes e blacklist/whitelist.

Tutta questa roba non e' implementata su WriteFreely (le reazioni a un blog post vanno piu' o meno in /dev/null), il supporto stesso per ActivityPub va meglio nelle nuove versioni ma ha ancora diversi bug qua e la' che non ho avuto tempo di investigare, e probabilmente mi ci sarebbero voluti mesi se non anni di sviluppo a implementare tutte queste feature sul loro codice.

I am glad to announce that [Madblog](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/madblog) has now officially joined the #Fediverse family.

Madblog has already supported #Webmentions [for the past couple of weeks](https://blog.fabiomanganiello.com/article/webmentions-with-batteries-included), allowing your blog posts to be mentioned by other sites with Webmentions support (WordPress, Lemmy, HackerNews...) and get those mentions directly rendered on your page.

It now adds ActivityPub support too, using #Pubby, another [little Python library](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/pubby) that I've put together myself (just like [Webmentions](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/pubby)) as a mean to quickly plug ActivityPub support to any Python Web app.

Webmentions and Pubby follow similar principles and implement a similar API, and you can easily use them to add federation support to your existing Web applications - a single `bind_webmentions` or `bind_activitypub` call to your existing Flask/FastAPI/Tornado application should suffice for most of the cases.

Madblog may have now become the easiest way to publish a federated blog - and perhaps the only way that doesn't require a database, everything is based on plain Markdown files.

If you have a registered domain and a certificate, then hosting your federated blog is now just a matter of:

- **Interactions rendered on the articles**: if you like, boost, quote or reply to an article, all interactions are rendered directly at the bottom of the article (interactions with WriteFreely through federated accounts were kind of lost in the void instead)

- **Guestbook support** (optional): mentions to the federated Madblog handle that are not in response to articles are now rendered on a separate `/guestbook` route

- **Email notifications**: all interactions can have email notifications

- **Support for quotes**, also on Mastodon

- **Support for mentions**, just drop a `@joe@example.com` in your Markdown file and Joe will get a notification

- **Support for hashtag federation**

- **Support for split-domain configurations**, you can host your blog on `blog.example.com` but have a Fediverse handle like `@blog@example.com`. Search by direct post URL on Mastodon will work with both cases

- **Support for custom profile fields**, all rendered on Mastodon, with verification support

- **Support for moderation**, either through blocklist or allowlist, with support for rules on handles/usernames, URLs, domains or regular expressions

- A partial (but comprehensive for the provided features) implementation of the **Mastodon API**

Our mission is to facilitate their verification process, but we control neither their accounts nor those of their intermediaries.

I can speak for the campaign I manage, and I can say that they use a payments gateway to the Maestro/Mastercard circuit that is hosted in other Arab countries. Which is common also for other campaigns. But I can't speak in the name of all account managers of course.

I know that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are being used by a few accounts, but it's usually not their preferred method of payment. That's because transaction processing fees are even higher than those of traditional payments circuits, especially if the transactions are small. btw SolSoCoG (npub1hn3…5ffn) I thought that the issue with parsing the two accounts on your instance was due to your server blocking requests from mine (I've been careful about generated traffic, you shouldn't see more than 5-6 requests to your API every couple of hours from the gaza-verified archive scrapers).

But now I see that the requests actually fail at DNS level (often because of timeouts), no matter which DNS I use:

In the archive case it does.

I need to fetch the latest snapshot of their profile data in order to get their campaign URL (there are several cases of campaign URL changes). And if the archive can't do that then it won't proceed with processing that account, assuming that it's unreachable.

I have [just changed this behaviour](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/gaza-archive/commit/25d1d2b8828c40a4c5d5756f6e58b4b00455a4f5), so if it can't fetch an account's profile for any reason the archive falls back to the latest db snapshot (if available). This means however that we may end up with stale data in case they change their campaign URL and the profile still can't be fetched by my server.

This is a different case.

This happened because the campaign URL was originally posted on the profile as `https://www.chuffed.org/project/148450` and it's now been changed to `https://chuffed.org/pay/campaign/148450` (which directly points to the payments form).

The archive wasn't designed to handle this type of URL too, so it skipped the processing of that campaign assuming that it didn't have a valid URL.

This has now [been fixed too](https://git.fabiomanganiello.com/gaza-archive/commit/6272ffaf1a5ee63ab167d62bd460606171e1ab1a).

The archive has now just been restarted with both the fixes and it should probably catch up with those campaigns soon too.

#GazaVerified accounts often face limitations on their accounts - sometimes because of spam-like activities, sometimes because of genuine discrimination.

Our goal is to ensure that these accounts are safe on the Fediverse, and that unmotivated suspensions are immediately visible.

On the other hand, we also want to make sure that other Fediverse users don't feel overwhelmed by requests of support, and that the activities of our friends from #Gaza on the Fediverse don't cross generally accepted thresholds for spam (mass tags, unsolicited mentions and private messages, copy-pasted messages...).

In order to provide all sides with better transparency and feedback loops, I have now added a suspension state checker to the gaza-verified archive which periodically updates the list of limitations for all the accounts in the initiative.

gaza.onl now reports for each account whether they are:

- ⚠️ _LIMITED_ (their posts are only visible to accounts that follow them, and follow requests require approval)
- 🚫 _SUSPENDED_ (they cannot post and they can only appeal to admins/moderators on their parent instance to lift the ban)
- 🗑️ _DELETED_ (they have been permanently deleted from the instance they are on and their accounts cannot be recovered)

These icons are now visible on:

The account page also provides a new _See Suspensions_ button that allows to check if a user is limited or suspended on other instance (even if they are active on their parent instance).

The same rules apply here:

- ⚠️ _LIMITED_: their posts are only visible to people who follow them, and follow requests require approval (_only_ for users on that instance though)
- 🚫 _SUSPENDED_: their accounts and posts are not visible to anyone on that instance (note however that they can keep posting on their own instance, it's only users on the suspending instance that are affected)
- 🗑️ _DELETED_: their accounts have been permanently delete from that instance (it can also be a result of defederation of the whole parent instance though)

The archive fetches every 2 hours the top 50 Mastodon instances by monthly active users, so those lists should give a good idea of the reach of an account's campaign - and if people not responding on a certain instance may be the result of active limitations on that instance.

An [API endpoint](https://gaza.onl/swagger/#/accounts/get_account_suspensions_api_v1_accounts__account__suspensions_get) to check suspension on a per-account basis is also available.

the particlar case you highlighted happened because of connection issues with the instance that hosts that account (ieji.de) - most of the automated requests made by the archive to that account fail with a timeout, so without getting an up-to-date version of the campaign URL the campaign is still stuck.

That should be the only case I see consistently though. If you spot any other accounts with similar issues that have actually collected donations in the past week please let me know.

Everybody hated a decrepit theocratic dictator who has held back Iran's progress for decades.

Everybody hated an octogenarian who prevented women from dressing however they wanted, slaughtered protesters, prevented the development of arts and freedom of expression and isolated its own people.

He deserved to die.

It's an attack against a violent decrepit theocratic regime hated by its own citizens. A regime that doesn't have any problems with murdering tens of thousands of its own citizens whose only sin was to join a protest against the government. A regime that has been destabilizing the Middle East for the past 45 years. A regime that should have gone long ago, and that it's holding Iran back.

That attack however comes from the Israeli Kahanist regime. A colonialist and genocidal entity worse than the Nazis from all the perspectives. A terrorist regime that has been violating international borders and resolutions for more than half a century and destabilizing the Middle East just like Iran. A colonialist entity that has leveraged each chance it got to violently annex new territories. A genocidal regime that has turned Gaza into a parking lot amid the deafening silence of the international community, displaced and starved 2M Palestinians and killed at least tens of thousands of them. A Nazi entity that shoots teenagers for the sake of it and then lets them bleed on the streets while preventing ambulances from helping them.
