We’re not eating every day. I’ve been sleeping without a mattress for 2 years. I wake up in the middle of the night because of the noise of drones and explosions and people shouting and crying, because of hunger, and because of nightmare. I’m inhaling plastic smoke most days to cook food and heat up water. I lost half of my weight, I’m pale, and my hair is thinning out while I’m 21 years old.

In #Palestine, traditionally, people eat feseekh, a very salted fish. The fish is kept in salt for a month, which cooks its flesh. It tastes very strong, and it’s delicious! If salted fish is unavailable, some people have smoked fish instead.

Unfortunately, my family wasn’t able to afford feseekh this year. But I enjoyed thinking about it. God willing, we’ll have it next year.

This morning, the local Mesaharati were very enthusiastic: they were calling out and banging their drums loudly. They woke everyone up immediately. 😅

The fast itself starts every day at the first light of day (and it ends at sunset). It coincides with one of the five daily prayers, Fajr. Before Fajr, we eat a morning meal called Suhoor. My family always wakes up and eats this meal all together. It’s wonderful.

Ramadan is a very communal experience. Everyone supports each other and is in a good mood.

It's very cold in Khan Yunis, especially at night. It's raining, the air is humid, the tents have been flooded again. To keep warm and dry indoors, people burn paper and plastic.

Unfortunately, two years into a genocidal massacre, as well as 18 years into a siege, we can’t protect ourselves well from the cold:
We lack warm clothes, gloves, scarves and beanie hats. Warm drinks are very expensive. And people don’t burn wood in fireplaces, but plastic instead, which diffuse cancer-inducing smokes.
