I seem to have accidentally got myself on a lot of booksellers' email lists (forgetting to untick boxes when ordering books seems to be my problem) and just today I got an email:

I don't know how it works in Canada (or where he said it), but in NZ anything said in the debating chamber in Parliament isn't covered by defamation law. Parliament has its own rules and processes - the Speaker can kick someone out of the chamber, but they can't be sued.

Outside Parliament we've had a PM sued by a convicted killer when they wrongly used the word "murderer", but inside Parliament have had a breach of a court suppression order be unable to be prosecuted.

I'd just settle for being able to grow lemons. Unfortunately it's too cold this far south to grow lemons, and for it to get warm enough would mean flooding fairly much the entire city. (Southland doesn't have the luxury of being on a gentle slope like Canterbury. Ashvegas is about 100m above sea level. Edendale - a longer distance inland - is only about 40m above sea level).

if it's the article I think it is (that I might have heard some time last week) the people they were interviewing had been using it for keeping weeds down in - a vineyard I think? - and they reckoned it was actually beneficial for the soil so they were going to experiment in a paddock. Still could be wasteful but there's nothing much else they can do if the money they can get for selling the wool is less than the cost of trucking it out.

Land Information NZ hosted a couple of webinars this week and showed us the new functionality in their basemap service at https://basemaps.linz.govt.nz. Thanks to much of the country now having LIDAR data (and a bit of fudging in the gaps with 20 metre contours) they've now got a smart new 3D terrain map.

The problem is, sometimes the LIDAR has been processed to show the underlying ground level, not the above-ground structures...
