Google Quantum AI published a paper yesterday reducing by ~20x the estimated number of physical qubits needed to break the cryptography that protects Bitcoin. It would take ~500,000 physical qubits to execute the attack in minutes.

Scary headline. But the most powerful quantum computer in the world today—Google’s own Willow—has 105 qubits. The gap between 105 and 500,000 is not linear; it’s exponentially complex in engineering terms. The paper itself states that such a machine does not exist.

What the coverage ignores:

Elliptic curve cryptography doesn’t protect just Bitcoin. It protects the global banking system, SWIFT, stock exchanges, military communications, every HTTPS website on the planet. If a quantum computer breaks Bitcoin, it breaks everything. The difference is that centralized systems can deploy silent patches. Bitcoin requires consensus—it’s slower, but transparent and auditable.

And Bitcoin is already preparing. BIP 360 has been accepted into the official repository, with a functional implementation on testnet using post-quantum Dilithium signatures (NIST standard), 50+ miners, 100,000+ blocks, and an active community of 100+ cryptographers. The co-author of BIP 360 estimates ~7 years for full migration. Google itself is racing to migrate its systems by 2029—not because the threat is imminent, but because preparation takes time. Bitcoin is on the same path.

A detail few mentioned: the paper’s co-author is Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation. Vitalik Buterin has already published a post-quantum roadmap for Ethereum and publicly reinforced the urgency. Nothing against it, but it’s worth noting: those competing for second place have an incentive to highlight weaknesses in the first. The paper is legitimate. The narrative amplification isn’t always.

The market understood. #Bitcoin is up +3% in the last 24 hours, marking a third consecutive day of gains, while “quantum-resistant” tokens pumped 50%. The pattern repeats: apocalyptic headlines, memecoins ride the hype, and Bitcoin keeps doing what it has always done.

Harold (Hal) Thomas Finney was a polymath. He started his career developing games.

Later, he joined the PGP Corporation—one of the first companies to commercialize cryptography—working alongside the legendary Phil Zimmermann.

He was an active member of the Cypherpunks mailing list, exchanging ideas with pioneers like Wei Dai and Nick Szabo.

Hal operated servers that routed anonymous messages.

On the early internet, he debated ways to defund the U.S. government’s “ponzi” schemes.

He also launched prototypes for new forms of electronic money, such as RPoW (Reusable Proof of Work).

👑 But his most iconic achievement happened on January 12, 2009 👇

Hal Finney had been following a new idea circulating on the cypherpunk mailing list: #Bitcoin.

On January 11, 2009, a Sunday, someone named Satoshi posted Bitcoin’s source code on the list.

Hal was the FIRST to reply! In a moment of wild imagination, he suggested that 1 BTC could one day be worth $10 million.

Hal even exchanged emails with Satoshi and helped fix bugs in Bitcoin's code.

On January 12 in Greenwich (January 11 at 7:24 PM in California), Hal received 10 #BTC in a "test" transaction initiated by the creator himself.

This was—and will forever remain—the first transaction in the history of #Bitcoin.

Those 10 #BTC, today, are worth more than $1 million.

Each "50.00" #BTC block mined represents ~$5M 🤑.

Hal mined over $12 MILLION in just one week, between January 10 and 16, 2009 🤯

During those days, Hal's son, Jason, could hear the processors roaring at full speed in the attic 🔥

He recalled his dad's excitement in an interview:

Even as ALS ravaged his body, Hal never stopped working, continuing to contribute to projects like Bitcoin and other open-source endeavors. His dedication to his work and the legacy he built serves as an inspiration for many, showcasing how perseverance and passion can defy the most difficult of circumstances.

First, Hal lost strength in his legs.
Then, in his upper limbs.

As his hands weakened, he built a device to continue typing with the movements of his eyes (the "black antennas" in the last photo).

He was never seen complaining.

In 2011 and 2012, Hal's disease progressed.

But the prospect of cryonics gave him hope. Just as the work he was doing on Bitcoin wallet security did.

Fran Finney recalls:

"Hal longed to experience tomorrow. He embraced every new thing."

On his last ski trip, Hal reflected on the mental strength that remained:

“It’s good that, you know, I can say goodbye mentally as it happens. It makes it a little easier.”

He had agreed with Fran that when he could no longer communicate with his family, it would be time to go.

On August 26, 2014, the day arrived.

Hal’s vital functions were ceased, and the cryonic procedure was initiated.

He became the 128th patient of Alcor.

Today, his body floats in a tank at -150°C, in the middle of Arizona.

His memories, informationally, remain intact.

The boy was forbidden to go up there when his father’s computers, Hal’s, were turned on.

That night, his dad had an important mission: to receive the first #Bitcoin transaction in history.

Jason was 26 years old when, on a Saturday—January 10, 2009—his father fired up the machines and sent a tweet from the attic that would go down in history.

#Bitcoin had barely been launched, and Hal Finney had already downloaded the software and was mining coins at home.

It was no coincidence.

Harold Thomas Finney II was the perfect figure to receive Satoshi Nakamoto’s torch 🗽

He was one of the first employees of the PGP Corporation.

In 2004, he created a system of reusable proof-of-work. He was also an active participant on the mailing list where Satoshi announced #BTC.

Hal and Fran Finney had two children.

The kids grew up immersed in technology. They had home internet as early as 1991.

Their father was a video game developer who became a cypherpunk activist.

But even by that household’s standards… Hal’s recent obsession was curious.

When Satoshi released the software, Hal rushed to install it, helped fix bugs, and made the famous prediction that “a coin could eventually be worth $10M.”

He began mining.

In January 2009, that attic was humming day and night. Hal was excited.

In early 2009, Jason noticed that his father’s computer processor was running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at full speed. “He mentioned that he was helping someone test a kind of prototype for an online money system. That’s how he saw it. It wasn’t real—it was a test for a prototype.”

More specifically, this test was the receipt of the first Bitcoin transaction by Hal. Although it was just another step in the process for him, Hal’s role would forever secure him a place in the annals of cryptography around the world.

Two days after the famous tweet, Hal received the first transaction in history:

Israel faced a critical strategic challenge: how to ensure a steady oil supply in a hostile Middle East?
In the mid-1950s, Iran under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi — who didn’t even officially recognize Israel — became its primary supplier, accounting for up to 90% of Israel’s oil imports.   
In 1965, Israeli Foreign Minister Golda Meir made a secret visit to Iran.
There, she proposed a bold plan to the Shah: build a pipeline linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean, bypassing the Suez Canal — and secretly supplying oil to Israel.   
The negotiations included representatives from Mossad and the Iranian state oil company NIOC — a testament to the initiative’s strategic importance.
Two years later, everything changed: the closure of the Suez Canal.   
Following the Six-Day War, Egypt shut down the canal, and 75% of Iranian oil exports were left without a route.
The Shah saw the pipeline as a perfect opportunity: reduce dependence on Egypt and strengthen his leverage over Western oil companies.
It was the final push needed.   
Thus was born Trans-Asiatic Oil Ltd., a 50/50 joint venture between Iran and Israel — registered in Switzerland, of course.
Officially, Iran said: “We don’t sell oil to Israel.”
In practice? They did — operating pipelines and even having Israeli naval escorts for Iranian tankers.   
The 254-kilometer pipeline between Eilat and Ashkelon was completed in 1969.
In its first year, 10 million tons of oil passed through it. Israel kept 3 million; the rest was sold via Israel, with profits split between the secret partners.
A true geopolitical masterpiece.   
While Israel secured its energy supply, the Shah’s Iran challenged Western oil giants and filled its coffers — all under the radar.
It was a win-win: oil, money, and influence for both sides. Hidden from the rest of the Arab world.   
But everything changed in 1979 with the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
Israel nationalized the pipeline, ending the secret alliance.
The case ended up in court — and in 2016, an international tribunal ordered Israel to pay Iran over $1 billion for breach of contract.   
Today, even mentioning such an alliance would sound like fiction.
But for over a decade, Israel’s greatest enemy was… its biggest ally behind the scenes.
