When I started my channel I was sick of "urbanist" content being so passive and mealymouthed.

Everything was always hedged with a "we don't want to take away anybody's cars but ..." and every argument was buried in so much "data" that nobody who wasn't already a diehard urbanist would sit through it.

It pisses some people off but I literally do not care. It's ridiculous how much better Amsterdam has become in the past 7 years compared to cities that try to pacify drivers.

Yeah, nuclear reactors are crazy expensive, so much so that it's hard to get a loan to construct one. Which means most financing needs to come from the government.

This may change as small modular reactors (SMRs) become more common, but even then, I think these make more sense for industrial uses, such as powering a datacentre, rather than being connected to the grid.

I suspect that this is fossil-fuel propaganda.

Fossil fuel companies love promoting nuclear power because they know it takes decades to get a reactor built (if it gets built at all), and in the meantime, everyone keeps using fossil fuels.

It's the perfect way to cripple renewables without being obvious about it.

The physical amount of Uranium that is used in nuclear reactors is quite small, and it doesn't need to be delivered constantly like oil or gas.

Plus there's lots in Canada and Australia.

But now? Nuclear rectors take ages to construct and they will not be as cheap as renewables.

The really radioactive stuff decays in a fairly short period of time and it's kept on-site in water pools (and the Cherenkov radiation looks so cool).

Once it's been there for a few years the remaining material is much less radioactive and very small.

This means that the concept of "base load" is not really relevant, because there is no consistent base. And when the residual load goes negative, the wholesale price of electricity goes negative as well.

Last year the Netherlands had negative wholesale electricity prices for about 7% of the year, and that amount is only going to grow.

You can't afford to run a nuclear reactor when electricity prices are negative, but you also can't shut it down every day either.

Energy consumption goes up and down throughout the day, but the "base load" is the minimum amount, even at the lowest point in the day. So nuclear power is good for providing this "base" because it's consistent and always running.

The issue is that renewables sometimes output so much electricity that, especially when it's sunny, the grid makes *way* too much electricity. The electricity consumption of the grid minus renewables is called the "residual load", and it very very often goes NEGATIVE.

I especially hate it when people call them a "prediction market". They don't "predict" anything, any more than a traditional bookie "predicts" the outcome of a horse race.

Also it's not true that "few creators have exclusives or pre-releases". The majority of Nebula creators have some kind of exclusives and release their videos early there, and more than half of the views on Nebula are for exclusive content.

Nebula is very quickly becoming a streaming service for high-quality documentaries and TV shows, but with a lot more creativity than the big streaming platforms.

I'm not sure I want to take on a different payment platform though, as it's difficult to get people to move over.

They also take a higher % cut than Patreon.

Right now, Nebula is my platform of choice for support. Yes, it's American, but it's owned by creators (including me) and not VCs, so I have more faith that it won't enshittify over time.

I don't use Google Maps when cycling in Amsterdam, because some of the routes it gives are absolutely terrible.

But what's more interesting is WHY Google Maps provides such poor cycling directions, because it reveals some really interesting differences between the way cities are designed in the Netherlands vs. America.

The idea that only wealthy people live autoluw today may be true. But it's much more likely to be because autoluwe neighbourhoods are so desirable that there isn't enough supply, so the price is high, pricing out everyone else.

It's typical of conservatives to use liberal values such as diversity and the environment as a shield to argue against the exact opposite.

I've shown this neighbourhood dozens of times in my videos. It's a great redesign, but it's not autoluw; they've just removed street parking.

This is also a new autoluw neighbourhood that is under construction, with the final buildings estimated to be completed in 2035.
