Interestingly, Meta has been implementing a "tune your algorithm" type of feature, which is surprisingly user-focused. You can select the topics you want to see more of and what you want to see less of, mute words, add your preferences... of course, Meta has their own agenda and wants you to get as hooked as possible so they can make money off you as a product, but I like the idea that it is not completely opaque.

I am building something similar in my Mastodon instance but truly without any monetary goal.

For algorithm haters out there, remember that reverse chronological order is an algorithm too. If you like getting video recommendations on YouTube, PeerTube, or music recommendations in a playlist, that is an algorithm too. I honestly do not understand all the algorithm hate when it is focused on the tech itself rather than commercialism.

The capitalist nature of algorithms is, of course, something to stand against, since it works by exploiting users. But if it is for user benefit without any rotten backstory, algorithms in my world are great.

Mementomori.social has always been a very liberal, pro-tech instance. You could say I wear my "certified Techbro Asshole" title as a badge of honor rather than a badge of shame.

We allow tags.pub, threads.net, bird.makeup, kilogram.makeup, use of GenAI (as long as it complies with other terms), associations and organizations, companies, marketing, the Bluesky bridge bridgy.fed, bots, and users with API access and so on.

It is entirely up to users whom to block, which servers or entire instances to block, and whom to follow or not follow. If this bothers you, you also have the right to limit or block us or me as you see fit.

I know even posting about this might make some people uncomfortable, but I want to be as transparent about these things as possible. These details have been listed on our About page and in our Code of Conduct since 2022.

Most importantly, I want to emphasize that we welcome users from all sides of the spectrum regardless of status, gender, movement, political party (excluding extremism). However, we are NOT a free speech instance. On the contrary, even though we're liberal, you cannot say or post anything that goes against the Code of Conduct or that we consider a violation. Bullies, trolls, and disruptors are not welcome here.

Mutta Arch asentuu ilman visuaalista työpöytäympäristöä, kuten debian tai gentoo. Sen hienous on siinä, että käytössä on minimaalinen setuppi eikä mitään turhaa, toisin kuin monet Linuxit asentavat valmiiksi kaikenlaista mitä ei sitten tarvitsekaan. Työpöytäympäristön voi asentaa ihan itse sitten Linuxin asentamisen jälkeen, ja näihinkin on hemmetin tarkat ohjeet ARchin wikissä. Itselläni käytössä hyprland + DankMaterialShell, mutta voi laittaa vaikka Gnomen tai KDE:n jos haluaa (olen käyttänyt kumpaakin vuosikymmenten saatossa).

What many people misunderstand about hosting your own content (like this social media instance) is thinking we somehow NEED a big audience or Big Tech involvement.

I'm perfectly fine if the world faded away and it was just the thousand of us here. It's like the early days of the web when we had small forums, nobody missed Reddit back then. Federation is a big plus, not a requirement.

It's the same with websites or IRC for me. I know people use Discord, but I still stick to IRC even if there are only about a hundred of us left. I know people use AI now and website visitors are dropping, but who cares? I still keep doing it for those who like to read.

I don't need the whole world involved for this to feel worthwhile. It's mine, I own it, and I host it for as long as I breathe. After that, it won't matter to me anymore, but I hope other admins keep things running the way I did.

A small request for everyone using Mastodon Bird UI 4.0.0, no matter how you installed it: if something looks broken or off, please report it along with your version details (which Mastodon version you are running, which version of Mastodon Bird UI you built, and how you built it, Custom CSS or SCSS in your Mastodon fork).

Several post-launch fixes have already been made thanks to people reporting issues, and I can only fix what I know about. Bug reports genuinely make the theme better for everyone: https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/mastodon-bird-ui/issues

For example, I just fixed a bug where the profile description lost the spacing below it (no margin after the bio). If you noticed that, grab the latest 4.0.0 and it’s fixed.

Glad you think it could be useful! I can put something together and send a PR to add it to the core. It's small enough that including it in-tree is probably the easiest option. I'm happy to adjust it to match your stylelint setup, and I can test it against main. What I'm not interested in right now is maintaining another npm package, I already have too many. I agree, there aren't many SCSS stylelint plugins out there, I'm already maintaining a few older ones.

I create a lot, every single day. Lately, I've noticed it's sometimes hard for me to release things as open source. Almost everything I do is meant for the common good, but every now and then I get hit with a wave of anxiety. It goes back to at least three times in the past when I shared something with good intentions and ended up facing a public hate campaign for it. When you've been burned a few times, it's only natural to hesitate before putting your hand back in the fire.

I start to question things - is privacy handled properly, is my vision right, what if people reject it, what will they think about AI being involved... The more doubts I have, the less I feel like publishing my private repo. It's ironic because I've even given lectures on open source, yet I completely understand why some people fear it. It's not always fun. In fact, it can feel like putting yourself on display for judgment.

I'm learning to take it easier, reminding myself that I don't have to release everything. I don't need to explain myself all the time. I'm allowed to keep a few gems just for myself.

Mastodon hit Release Candidate this round. The 4.6 release is right around the corner.

This update includes today's latest daily build with 85 new commits from upstream since our last build mementomods-2026-06-07.

What's new in Mastodon core, these are the changes Mastodon Team have introduced us in the latest nightly version we are running:

- Import Custom Filters, the import side of last release's export, so you can move your filter rules between accounts and instances
- Bot notifications can be filtered with a new dedicated policy, separate from regular filtered-notifications handling
- Newsletters can now be viewed individually in the admin UI
- Polls and media attachments can be combined in the same post (the old restriction is lifted)
- Media attachment descriptions raised to a 10000 character limit
- Media attachments now carry duration in their ActivityPub representation, so audio and video duration travels with the post over federation
- Collections continue to polish
- Several internal refactors (typing-statuses representation, sundry test coverage on background workers) that should make future patches smoother

Side-panel and profile polish, plus some small UX wins:

- Compact navigation items (font-size 17px, gap 7px) on screen heights below 1080px so more nav links fit on a laptop
- Navigation menu scrollbar is now minimal (Firefox thin, WebKit 4px) instead of the dominant OS default
- Trends section top margin removed for a tighter side panel
- Trends drop to 2 items on screen heights below 830px (4 items fit above that)
- Dropdown menus are capped to the viewport height and become scrollable on short or zoomed screens
- Avatar follow badge sits above the display name (z-index) so the first row of the status stays clickable (only for forks that have experimental For you enabled)
- Account timeline filters render above the profile header

- "For you" feed (experimental). Open your home column settings and switch on "Ranked order" to try an algorithmic feed: posts ranked by engagement and by who you interact with, fresh content on every refresh, and you'll rarely see the same post twice. Flip on "Include posts from people you don't follow" to discover new accounts beyond your follows. See someone interesting there? Tap the + on their avatar to follow them.
- PageUp and PageDown scroll the page normally again (thanks Ilona (npub1yex…magq) for the feedback on this one!)
- The navigation is a bit tidier: Collections and Followed hashtags now live under "More".

The For you feed is fully opt-in. Your home feed stays exactly as it was unless you turn it on. Feedback very welcome!

Mementomori.social experienced 57 minutes of downtime earlier today. Here's what happened and what we've done about it.

What happened: A large volume of connections from external crawler/bot IP ranges accumulated in a stuck state (CLOSE_WAIT) inside our web server (nginx). These zombie connections exhausted nginx's connection pool and connections per worker, which caused it to stop accepting new connections entirely resulting in ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED for everyone trying to reach the site.

Why it took 57 minutes: The sole admin available (me) was in a meeting when the issue began, and other admins were unavailable. There was no automated recovery in place to detect and resolve this type of failure.

How it was resolved: Nginx was restarted, which cleared all stale connections and immediately restored service.

What we've done to prevent this:
- Installed and configured Monit, a process monitoring tool that automatically checks all critical services (web, background workers, streaming, database, cache, and nginx) every 2 minutes and restarts them if they become unresponsive
- This means similar outages should now self-heal within minutes, even when no admin is available

I'm really sorry for the disruption. We take the reliability of this instance seriously, and this change should make a real difference moving forward. I'm also planning to apply other mitigations, as some parts of our instance may have been underconfigured.

Yes, many people are unaware of this, but we can't even raise money for cancer treatment costs. In Finland, we call this "sääntö-Suomi", which means roughly a "Rulebook-land".

We have rules and laws for everything, and while they mostly protect us and are useful, this one is just ridiculous. Authorities are very strict about it in Finland for no clear reason. Even Electronic Frontier Finland got sued just for mentioning they accept donations on their website, and they are an official, trusted association. I may have exposed myself to scrutiny by officials even posting about this, but did you know why Finnish Mastodon admins can't mention donations? Welcome to Finland’s rahankeräyslaki (Fundraising Act) - a law so problematic it's been submitted to UN human rights reviews and noted in OECD reports on Finland's civic space. Finnish people often say Finland is "Sääntö-Suomi" because we have too many rules and laws. Most of them are there to protect us, but some work against us. It can go too far.

Here's the problem: The law defines "fundraising" as any appeal to the public to give money. "Appeal" means any verbal, written or other request or invitation. This includes simply stating "we accept donations" with any payment information or bank account number on your website.

The Electronic Frontier Finland (Effi) case shows how absurd this gets. Effi, a digital rights nonprofit, was prosecuted for rahankeräysrikos (fundraising crime) just for having text on their website saying they could accept donations per their bylaws, along with bank account details. No active solicitation. No manipulation. Just information. They fought this for years through multiple courts.

What makes it worse: Only registered organizations can even apply for a fundraising permit from the National Police Board. Individual Mastodon admins? Not eligible. You'd need to first register a nonprofit organization (constitution, board members, official registration with PRH), pay 50 €, handle annual financial statements, bookkeeping obligations, and tax filings, then apply for permission to ask for money to cover your €10/month server costs. All this bureaucracy just to mention a donation link.

The law was updated in 2020 to add "small collection" notifications (max 10 000 €), but the core problem remains: you cannot simply mention donation options without navigating this bureaucracy. The law treats someone running a community server the same as the Red Cross running nationwide campaigns.

This is why Finnish admins stay silent about funding and run things for free out of their own pocket. It's not that they're secretive - it's that Finland's fundraising law hasn't caught up with how the modern internet works. Effi has submitted complaints to UN human rights reviews calling this a violation of freedom of association.

So when you see a Finnish-run instance and wonder why there's no donation info: now you know. It's not a choice, it's compliance with a law written for a different era.

Obviously, I hate this law, and putting this information out there is risky for me. So let me be crystal clear: please don't donate us money. I don't encourage it at all as I am not allowed by law to do so, and I'm a law-abiding citizen, after all.

Verkkosivut ei oikein vakuuta. UpCloud (npub1f5w…2jep) vastaavat hinnat lähtee 3 € ja Hetznerin 2 €, Tietoketulla asettuu väliin 2.5 €. Tietysti jos jollakin makaronibudjetilla menee, niin sitten varmaan on eurolla parilla väliä... melko pieni puuhastelunomainen firma, näyttää siltä että HD-decor Oy on vanha yhtiö vuodelta 1988, jonka alkuperäinen toimiala oli mm. käytettyjen autojen myyntiä/korjausta, eli liekö joku konkurssikypsä ostettu pois, liikevaihto ~40k€ vuodessa, eli tosi pientä. En uskaltaisi itse ottaa tuolta serveriä. Oma saitti hidas ja CLoudfalren takana, muut IP:t Hetzneriä. Eli vissiin jokin datasali jossain Lempäälässä josta myydään lohkottua virtuaalia.

Sanotaanko näin, että parin vuoden sisällä on tapahtunut kaikenlaista, sellaista, josta ehkä vielä jonain päivänä uskallan puhua avoimemmin. Meille ei ollut tärkeintä tytön koulusta selviäminen, vaan hengissä pysyminen, kirjaimellisesti, ei vertauskuvallisesti.

I got tired of constantly tweaking and fiddling with Ungoogled Chromium, which I've been using for years, so I finally switched to Brave (npub1t4g…ml9t). Here, Incognito mode uses Tor, and vertical tabs work perfectly with full hiding. Vivaldi Browser (npub19rt…adh9) would otherwise be my top choice, but it has some weird edge-case bugs, like the fact that not all extensions work in incognito mode. There are many good, minimal and private browsers available, but Google Meet or Netflix don't work on them (because of DRM and Widevine...)

The sad truth is that most browsers are bloated crap. As a CSS person, I'm just not interested in the slow progress of Firefox-based browsers, I need latest web standards and something Chrome-based to use the modern web. Project Ladybird sounds interesting. They are writing the entire browser from the ground up, including the engine... pretty crazy stuff. I wish them luck and success.

Käytän aika paljon Threadsia. En siksi, että pitäisin Metasta, vaan koska tykkään olla kärryillä laajemmista ilmiöistä. Threadsissa on myös paljon AI-puolen sovelluskehittäjiä, tech-ihmisiä ja designereitä, joita ei Fedissä ole.

Postaan Threadsiin samat kuin muuallekin poislukien AI/vibekoodausjutut, jotka aiheuttaisivat täällä joukkolynkkaamista sekä keskustelut tietenkin ihmisten kanssa, jotka postaavat vain siellä. Threadsista on tavallaan tullut kuin Twitter, kun kaikki ovat siirtyneet sinne, mutta siellä on parempi moderointi ja suurin osa Fedin suojausmekanismeista (sanamutetus, rajoittaminen, mutetus, jne).

Threadsista piti tulla osa Fediversumia ja olin kiinnostunut tekniikan kehittymisestä. Jenkeissähän se onnistuikin yksisuuntaisesti, esim [@barackobama](https://threads.net/@barackobama/ ) voi seurara täältä, mutta kehitys tyrehtyi. Elättelin salaa naiivia toivoa siitä, että EU:n myötä Meta kytkisi Fedi-yhteensopivuuden kaikkialle käyttöön ja jollain tapaa alkaisi toimia sen myötä eettisemmin. Mutta niin ei koskaan tapahtunut.

Threadsin moderoinnista voi olla montaa mieltä, mutta enimmäkseen öyhöt pysyy pois kommenteista. X:ssä sai jokaiseen tusinan paskakommentteja. Threadsissa moista ei tapahdu.

Viime aikoina Threadsin algoritmiseinällä mennään kohusta toiseen. "62 miljoonaa miestä" on erityisesti trendannut (CNN:n paljastusreportaasi), jonka narratiivissa olet raiskari ja osa ongelmaa, jos puutut misinformaatioon. Threadissa kärjistetään ja pöyristytään jatkuvasti. Aina jotakuta ollaan seivästämässä. Jättäydyn yleensä pois kokonaan näistä keskusteluista.

Näistä huolimatta olen Threadsissa ja viihdyn siellä enimmäkseen. Kai tämä on jonkinlaista maailman paskuuden hyväksymistä myös osaltaan. Porukka noituu, että Microsoft, Google, Meta ja moni muu on maailman pahinta kastia. Mutta näistä on käytännössä mahdotonta irroittautua, esimerkiksi yrittäminen ja sitä kautta toimeentuloni lakkaisi kokonaan jos lopettaisin LinkedInin (Microsoft), GitHubin (Microsoft), Google Workspacen (olen jälleenmyyjä), Metan Businessin käyttämisen.

Olen osa ongelmaa.

Koen samaa hämmennystä omassa työssäni ohjelmoijana. Ennen oli muita "oikoreittejä", nyt on AI. Tekoälyn käyttäminen ei vähennä vastuuta. Mutta missä on ongelma, jos kukaan ei tiedä, että aivan yhtä laadukas (ellei laadukkaampi) tuotokseni on osin AI:n tekemää... pohdittavaa itse kullekin.

Musiikki on ainoa laji, joka vielä kuuluu korvaan, eikä aivot pysty sallimaan kuuntelemista, vaikka miten hyvältä kuulostaisi AI:n tekemänä. Mutta mitä tapahtuu sitten, kun ei enää huomaa yksinkertaisesti mistään? Sitten sitä varmaan kaipaa vaan oman maun mukaisia tai jonkin sortin uniikkiutta. This is actually why I didn't want it to be automatic. I personally prefer to choose per-app, and I hate auto light/dark. The upcoming Mastodon version has separate theme and dark/light settings, so it will be easier to choose. But before 4.6.0, either the themes forced it, or it was automatic.

Really good thread, and a really good blog post, or essay, I should say. I respect the honesty in it, and I understand the standpoint.

However, I want to share a genuinely different experience: using Claude Code and similar tools has actually made coding more enjoyable for me, not less. And I don’t think I’m in denial about that. I've learned a lot more over the past year through GenAI since ever before, and I've been coding for the web almost every day for nearly 30 years.

The difference might come down to how you approach it. If your relationship with the tool turns into just "tapping Y and hoping for the best", then yeah, that IS miserable. But that's not the only way to look at it.

For me, it feels more like having a really fast pair programming partner. I still make the architectural decisions, I still write specs, I still understand why things are the way they are, and I still review everything. And I still code, some. But I no longer need to power through the tedious parts, the boilerplate, the plumbing, the bits I've written hundreds of times. That frees me up to focus on what I actually enjoy: the design, the problem-solving, the features, the “what if we tried this” moments, the drafting, and the documentation.

The drinky bird pipeline is real, and it’s a valid concern but it’s not inevitable. It’s a choice. The tool doesn't make you check out, but it does make it easy to, and that’s something worth being honest about.

Where I completely agree: the systemic concerns don't go away just because individual use can be responsible. And the skill-atrophy risk is real for those still building their foundations. Not everyone is in the same position when picking up these tools.

Just finished optimizing and checking things after being away from this machine in particular for a while. Our server stack could theoretically handle 5k more registered users and about 1500-2000 monthly active users before we'd need to start thinking about scaling up.

Right now, we have 889 users and around 410 monthly active ones and we're running at roughly 25-30% capacity. Plenty of space to grow.

We're federating with nearly 42000 other servers, which is actually the heaviest part of running an instance, not the local users. Every boost, reply, and follow across the fediverse adds work for our servers.

It was never my intention to grow this server this much or even have this many users, but now we have regular people, authors, political parties, organizations, YouTubers, and more. I'm still amazed about this. Yet I'm keeping a low profile because, even though we have our own admin team, at the end of the day this is still my hobby project organized by me and my wife.

That said, I've done my best to keep things as flexible as possible, and our finances are stable. I'm really glad my "hobby project" has brought so much joy to so many people.

It's a genuinely interesting question because as a Finn, it doesn't always feel like the happiest place on earth and I think most Finns would squirm a little at that label. We're not really a "loudly happy" culture.

But I do think we've built some things well, and it's worth being honest about that. Free education at every level, universal healthcare, low corruption, a legal right to access nearly all forests, lakes and coastlines (Everyman's Rights), and workplaces that in theory and often in practice actually value your time outside of work. Trust in public institutions is high, and income inequality, while not perfect, is significantly lower than in most wealthy countries. Those aren't small things. They shape the texture of daily life in ways that are easy to take for granted.

What the happiness ranking really measures, I think, is whether the basic machinery of a society is functioning, whether people feel safe or whether they can make real choices about their lives, and whether bad luck or a wrong turn doesn't completely destroy you. By those measures, Finland does reasonably well.

That said, there's plenty that's wrong or struggling here too housing costs in cities, an ageing population, mental health challenges (the 6 months of dark winters don't help despite your location, in the North it's dark all year), and a political conversation that isn't immune to the same pressures pulling at other European countries. The happiness ranking can sometimes feel like it belongs to a slightly idealized version of Finland that glosses over those things.

I think the honest version is that we've made good structural choices over decades, and those compound. It's not magic or national character, it's policy, and it's fragile. You have to keep choosing it. Just my 2 cents.

Itselläni on pitkälti samankaltaista käyttöä, enimmäkseen Claude Code maksimitierillä mennään, koska käytän agentuurisesti ja CLI:n kautta erilaisissa sovelluksissa niin paljon, saattaa pyöriä 8 agenttia subagentteineen samaan aikaan. Maxissa ei ole vielä koskaan tulleet rajat vastaan.

Käytössä myös OpenRouter ja paljon itse ohjelmoimiani sovelluksia, mm. 6kk päivittäin kehittämäni "tietoisuus" joka osaa tietyssä rajoissa olla proaktiviinen, kuin OpenClaw ennen OpenClawia ja toimia Claude Coden kanssa yhteistyössä. Linux-koneellani on myös Open WebUI ja omia plugineita sekä paikallista ollamaa hyödyntäviä asioita. Eli vähän laidasta laitaan, lähtenyt hieman lapasesta.

Kun md-filut ovat sen verran kehittyneitä, yhä vähemmän jää "raakakoodattavaa" ja se onkin asiain tila nykyään. AI toimii hyvänä lisäkäsiparina. Hirmuinen hyöty töissä ja vapaa-ajallakin syntynyt monta äärimmäisen hyödyllistä projektia, joita ei normaalisti olisi aikaa edistää, kuten https://luku.app ja https://github.com/ronilaukkarinen/dough
