Not your keys, not your coins — and not your heirs' coins either, unless they can find the keys.

A will doesn't solve it. "My family knows" doesn't solve it. It has to be documented: where the seed lives, the passphrase, the multisig config, and how your executor actually moves it.

I'm a California attorney who runs a node, mines, and holds my own keys. I wrote a free Bitcoin Inheritance Kit to close that gap:

• Custody audit checklist
• Heir letter (plain English)
• Digital asset memorandum (a real legal instrument)
• Executor technical guide
• Tax summary (stepped-up basis)
• Shamir's Secret Sharing guide
• Node & mining estate planning

8 editable docs. (Educational, not legal advice; the legal template is California-drafted.)

      In reply to nevent1q…v9me
_________________________

Two points, taken in order.

On signaling not equaling consensus change: BIP-110 doesn't activate a relay policy. It activates a consensus rule — once locked in at the 55% threshold, signaling nodes reject blocks that violate the new rules. A miner mining a block valid under the old rules but invalid under the new ones produces a block that activated nodes will not accept. That is the definition of a consensus rule. Signaling-without-enforcement is what BIP-110 looks like before activation. Signaling-with-enforcement is what it looks like after. The mechanism is identical to SegWit's, which is why I treat it as a consensus change — because that's what it is.

The SegWit comparison cuts the other way. SegWit had 95% signaling, 20 months of review, and overwhelming economic support before activation. BIP-110 has 55%, six weeks, and stalled at 0.15%. The framework distinguishes between proposals on those parameters — not on the question of whether they're "consensus changes." Both are. One met the bar. One didn't. That's what the scoring is for.

On Core "choosing inaction" on inscriptions: not-acting is a choice. Agreed. But the specific decision in 2022–2023 was whether to soft-fork to invalidate inscriptions retroactively, which would have required exactly the kind of consensus change process this framework calls for — review period, threshold, contingency plan, economic-node support. None of that work was done. Core declined to push a poorly-prepared soft fork. That's the same standard applied to BIP-110, applied consistently. If you score the 2022 inscription-ban hypothetical against the same 20 criteria, it fails for the same reasons BIP-110 fails.

The "do it alone or together" framing is the actual disagreement. You're right that BIP-110 attempts to coordinate filtering across the network. The objection isn't to coordination. It's to coordinating via a mechanism that fails the criteria for safe consensus changes. A 95% threshold proposal with 24 months of review and overwhelming economic support would coordinate filtering across the network too — and would score accordingly. Score that proposal. Show your work.

The framework scores Taproot at 18/20 explicitly and notes that SegWit would have passed at a high score. The methodology applies to any consensus or relay proposal — score a hypothetical block size increase against it, score the next softfork that comes through. If you think specific criteria are wrong, name them and we can discuss the criterion, not the score.

Two corrections on your facts:

BIP-110 was drafted as a soft fork. A consensus change. The paper treats it that way because the BIP itself does — that's why it has an activation threshold, a signaling mechanism, and a sunset clause. None of those exist for pure relay policy. "It's just standardness" is a framing some proponents use to make the proposal sound less consequential; the BIP text doesn't support it.

Opt-in mitigates accidental activation. The objection isn't that anyone is forced to activate. It's that bundling consensus-altering activation code into binaries distributed through normal update channels — alongside stable releases, with no risk disclosure at the point of selection — shifts coordination costs in a way the framework flags. That's spelled out in the activation safety section.

On "the client controlled by developers who permitted Ordinals" — Core didn't author ordinals. Ordinals exploited witness data that segwit made cheaper in 2017, years before inscriptions existed. You can be against ordinals (I am, my node filters them at the relay layer right now) without conflating two unrelated technical histories.

The "you took a side" framing assumes neutrality means having no conclusions. That's not what the framework claims. It claims the method is reproducible — anyone can score any proposal against the same 20 criteria and show their work. The framework's authority derives from its usefulness, not from its conclusions. If you score BIP-110 differently, post your scoring. That's the actual test.

Migrated both my nodes from Knots to Core.

When I wrote the consensus change checklist, I scored BIP-110 against my own 20 criteria and it didn't clear the bar. The framework is supposed to be neutral — a tool, not a verdict. But I was still running the client that's now packaged as the activation vehicle for that exact proposal.

Running BIP-110-bundled software while publishing analytical work arguing the proposal doesn't meet activation criteria is a contradiction I couldn't keep ignoring.

This isn't anti-Knots. Knots is legitimate software and the mempool policy work is real. What changed is the product — the codebase now ships activation code by default, opt-in to enable but present in the binary. My response to the package changing isn't a referendum on the client.

For anyone wondering: Core lets you configure mempool policy in bitcoin.conf. You don't need Knots to filter your own node. The defaults differ; the knobs are still there.

Migration was clean — moved chainstate between app data dirs on Umbrel, no IBD. 875G chain intact, ~15 minutes per node.

The checklist applies to me too. That's the whole point of writing one.

How do you evaluate a Bitcoin consensus change proposal?

Not whether you agree with the goal. Whether the proposal is safe to activate. Whether the code has been reviewed. Whether the activation threshold is high enough to avoid a chain split. Whether the timeline gave the community enough time to evaluate the risks.

There's no standard for answering those questions. The BIP process tells you how to format a proposal. It says nothing about whether the proposal meets a minimum bar for safety. No required review periods. No code audit standards. No activation threshold minimums. No chain split risk assessment.

I wrote a framework that fills that gap.

"Consensus Change Standards" is a 28-page paper with a 20-point Consensus Change Readiness Checklist. Binary scoring — each criterion is met or not met. You can apply it to any consensus change proposal, past or future.

Here's what it looks like applied to BIP-110:

- 55% activation threshold (Taproot used 90%)
- Approximately 2 months from proposal to activation client (Taproot took nearly 4 years)
- Multiple developers reported bugs in the activation client
- No public evidence of testnet deployment
- Activation client listed alongside stable releases with no risk disclosure

Score: 4/20. Taproot scores 19-20/20. Those aren't opinions. Those are inputs and outputs.

The framework doesn't take a position on whether BIP-110's goals are right or wrong. It evaluates the process.

What else is in the paper:

- Historical analysis of how P2SH, SegWit, SegWit2x, and Taproot were proposed, reviewed, and activated — with a comparison table of thresholds, timelines, and outcomes
- Tiered minimum review periods: 12 months for changes that add new validation rules, 24 months for changes that invalidate currently valid transactions
- Code audit standards: 3 independent developer reviews, comprehensive test suites, 3 months on testnet, fuzzing and adversarial testing
- Activation threshold standards: 90% minimum for miner-activated soft forks
- Sunset clause requirements for proposals described as temporary
- Legal analysis: negligence liability for developers who release defective activation clients, tortious interference from chain splits, fiduciary duty arguments from the Tulip Trading litigation, mining pool operator liability, and regulatory implications under IRS Revenue Ruling 2019-24

The legal section is what makes this paper different from anything else in the conversation. I'm a practicing litigator (California State Bar No. 343622, admitted to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California), a solo Bitcoin miner, and a full node operator. If a reckless activation ever causes a chain split and someone loses funds, the standard of care exercised in the process will be the first thing that gets evaluated.

The framework is designed to outlast any single proposal or debate. You can use it to evaluate BIP-110. You can use it to evaluate the next thing that comes along. That's the point.

CC BY 4.0. I hear a lot of people in the Bitcoin space argue that intellectual property shouldn't exist. I get the philosophy. But I hold a U.S. patent, a federal trademark, and I'm currently building a legal tech platform. Without IP protection, I wouldn't be investing the time, money, and risk into building something original — because anyone with more resources could just copy it and outrun me. IP isn't perfect. But it's the reason independent creators and small builders can compete against companies with unlimited budgets. You don't have to love the system to acknowledge that without it, the little guy gets crushed.

Full post: https://asaffulkslaw.com/ip-digital-assets/why-intellectual-property-matters-a-patent-holders-response-to-the-ip-is-theft-crowd/

#Bitcoin #IntellectualProperty #Patents #Entrepreneurship #Law

Before I became a defense attorney, I spent 20 years negotiating licensing deals, royalty agreements, and complex business contracts in the entertainment industry. People ask if that experience translates to law. My answer: every deposition I take, every MSJ opposition I draft, every mediation I prepare for — I'm drawing on two decades of reading people, managing risk, and closing deals. The courtroom is just a different studio.

https://asaffulkslaw.com

Building on my last post about L402 — answering the obvious questions:

"What AI would actually use this?"

Agentic AI. Not chatbots — agents. Software that you give a task and it breaks it into subtasks and executes them autonomously. Claude Code, Codex, OpenClaw, Moltbook. Thousands of AI agents are already making phone calls, sending emails, deploying code. No human clicking buttons.

"But I already pay for AI. Why would AI need money?"

You pay FOR the AI. But the AI needs to pay for things WHILE it works.

You say "build me an app with real-time bitcoin prices." The AI needs a premium data feed. Right now it stops. You sign up, get API keys, come back. With L402, the AI just pays. 50 sats. Keeps building. You set a budget, it spends within it.

"But do APIs even accept Lightning payments?"

Not many. Yet. This is the honest part.

Lightning Labs just shipped the rails. The trains come next. Aperture lets any developer make their API accept autonomous AI payments — but adoption is early.

Someone had to build the infrastructure first. That happened yesterday.

The 402 status code has been in HTTP since the 90s. "Payment Required." A placeholder waiting for permissionless digital money to exist.

30 years later, it finally works.

https://lightning.engineering/posts/2026-02-11-ln-agent-tools/

#bitcoin #lightning #ai

They need to pay for compute, data, APIs. They can't open bank accounts. They can't do KYC. They can't sign up for Stripe.

There's only one permissionless payment rail on Earth.

Lightning Labs released tools yesterday for AI agents to run Lightning nodes and transact autonomously. At the burning bush, Moses asked God His name.

The answer: אהיה אשר אהיה — "I Will Be What I Will Be."

Gematria of אהיה (Ehyeh) = 21.

This name wasn't revealed during peace. It came right before liberation — the exodus from Egypt. From slavery to sovereignty.

And it's future tense. Not "I was." Not "I am." I Will Be. Existence that no Pharaoh can permit or deny.

There will only ever be 21 million Bitcoin.

Not what money was. Not what the Fed allows it to be. What it will be.

From fiat slavery to monetary sovereignty. The gematria of liberation is 21.

#bitcoin #torah

Samourai Wallet — Bitcoin's most popular privacy wallet — is dead. Both founders now in federal prison.
Rodriguez got 5 years, Hill got 4. They pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. The feds argued Whirlpool (their coinjoin mixing tool) was a money laundering operation.

DOJ confirmed the seized Bitcoin stays in the Strategic Reserve. Sell it, they profit. Hodl it, they profit. Either way, government stacks off prosecuting Bitcoiners.

But the precedent is the bigger problem. The government's position: if you build a tool that mixes Bitcoin transactions and collect fees, you're a money transmitter. No custodial control required.

Rodriguez warned before reporting to prison: "Bitcoin miners will be the next targets" if this logic holds.

Mining pools collect fees. Mining pools combine outputs from multiple sources. If coinjoin is money transmission, what's pooled mining?

Difficulty drops nearly 5% on January 23. Largest downward adjustment since the October highs.

For the profit miners: The squeeze is forcing capitulation. Inefficient operations are exiting, survivors mine the same blocks with less competition. Margins improve. This is how the cycle works.

For the plebs solo mining at a loss:
You're not doing it wrong. You're doing it right.

Every independent miner — even one running a single ASIC in a garage — is a vote for decentralization. You're not trying to win the lottery. You're making the network harder to capture.

When Samourai gets shut down, when pool operators face legal pressure, when regulators go after coordinators — solo miners are the backstop. No company to subpoena. No coordinator to arrest. Just hashpower pointed at the chain.

Profit mining is a business. Solo mining is ideology. Both matter. But only one of them can't be turned off with a court order.

Keep hashing.

Datum does not display "best difficulty". Shutting down miners has no impact on chances of finding a block (aside from obvious hashing downtime)

2) Block templates are customizable entirely through Knots not Datum

Trying to make sense of these Datum numbers. Always though the DiffA number was the best difficulty, but it seems it's just the VDiff (min difficulty) times accepted shares (A). Is this correct, and if so is there a way to tell best difficulty in Datum? Not that best difficulty really matters unless it's greater than the network difficulty, but would be nice to know #asknostr

Heat is yet another sacrifice but one that is easier to get around for most people. Here is a shot of my setup. I've got a fan right behind the Q directed to another fan at the window. The airflow of the room tends to blow out that direction which helps. If you put it on a desk by a window with a window fan blowing out you'd barely notice the heat. It's nice and quiet too. Noise was always a major concern for me getting into bigger miners as well as 120v compatibility. Canaan nailed it with this

At .30 to .40 electricity you're looking at about 10,000 sats/day just to run it on Eco mode. I've got solar which offsets it a bit but it's still tough. The heat definitely isn't my main concern

The eco setting (800-900w) isn't too bad. But I'm fortunate to have a sunroom with lots of ventilation here so the heat is not a major issue. I've seen people run ducts from the back of the unit out to a window. You could also put a fan behind it and blow out a window. In the winter the heat is a plus

Make shift cooling solution for the Apollo BTC Miner (v1). Helps run higher hash rates cooler and quieter. I wouldn't recommend investing in one of these today as there are much less expensive and more efficient machines available. But this thing is built like a tank and has provided many years of solid hash for me

It coordinates work distribution so that miners collectively target the same block template, potentially reducing duplicate effort by assigning non-overlapping nonce ranges. This doesn’t mean they solve the block as a unified entity (solo mining still applies), but it optimizes their combined hashrate toward a single goal, which can feel like aggregation...

Public Pool’s protocol borrows from traditional pool mining concepts, where a central server (in this case, your node) orchestrates work to maximize efficiency. This includes aggregating hashrate for display and possibly optimizing nonce distribution, which DATUM avoids to maintain decentralization. DATUM’s focus is on letting each miner operate as a standalone entity with its own template control, while Public Pool treats your setup as a mini-pool

Can someone please give me an explanation why I should solo mine with Datum gateway instead of Public Pool on my node. Datum seems to be the preferred method as it's specifically integrated with Bitcoin Knots and supposedly it makes block templates customizable but Public Pool is open source and the GUI/statistics is much nicer. There's also no way I can find to customize the block templates in solo mode on Datum. #asknostr

I've got my miners connected to my node in solo mode via Datum. But every time I disconnect them or power cycle all the miners stats reset and it takes a while build back up. I believe diffA is the highest difficulty reached. Do I need them going constantly to have any reasonable chance of finding a block? My research indicates that it shouldn't matter but if these disconnect it takes several days to build back up my diffA. #asknostr
