“begging stochastic systems to be good boys is not a security strategy” exhibit ♾️

What really grinds my gears is how a whole industry chose to forget the 101 of ops security. This is not an “AI" problem, this is gross negligence by cloud providers like Raleway pretending "having evals" is an acceptable defense against catastrophic data loss & users having production tokens of any kind lying around such that an attacker (or misguided agent) can find it.

https://archive.ph/T3LU6

I’ve found myself feeling unmoored by the current crop of FOSS contributions. I genuinely don’t know how to proceed.

Of course there’s the slop where the PR checklist gets deleted & almost all items violated. The truly annoying part about this is that I always try to be kind & not a stickler about policies. I guess I don’t owe kindness to a bot, but it’s a bad look to be assertive in public. (1/5)

The main reasons for me to use Safari on macOS despite being behind on web standards is integration with its iOS siblings and performance.

However: bookmark sync is unreliable and relatedly reading list is so janky too that I switched to GoodLinks. And somehow the UI gets increasingly sluggish until I restart it like an old Windows system.

I guess it's time for an experiment.

I just noticed something rather unfortunate: a negative payout in my GitHub Sponsors

a bit of spelunking revealed that apparently thanks.dev—that allows to transfer your money into GHS—has refunded a bunch of payments from last year.

if you used this feature, I recommend checking your account

Watching the frustratingly fruitless fights over the USEFULNESS of LLM-based coding helpers, I've come down to 3 points that explain why ppl seem to live in different realities:

Most programmers:

1) Write inconsequential remixes of trivial code that has been written many times before.

2) Lack the taste for good design & suck at code review in general (yours truly included).

3) Lack the judgement to differentiate between 1) & FOSS repos of nontrivial code, leading to PR slop avalanche.

1/3

It's very on-brand for Mastodon to turn even more obnoxious & sanctimonious as we watch Bluesky sucking in tech Twitter.

Ppl KNOW that Mastodon exists—& they hate it. The reasons why they hate it have been known for years but nothing has been done about it.

Being condescending to users for wanting to be hand-held or have effective protections against the very reply guys that are going around scolding the impure is just proving them right.

No amount of dirt-digging on Bluesky will change that.

The speed is really cool, but the reason Rust is elemental is that it’s one compiled blob that can be used to bootstrap and maintain a Python development. A blob that will never break because someone upgraded Homebrew, ran pip install or any other creative way people found to fuck up their installations. Python has shown to be a terrible tech to maintain Python.

      beautiful

On macOS, `pipx run --python 3.12 mopup` is so much better than any of the on-demand builders and their various weird failure modes. Even standalone-python has failed on me in practice due to the way it’s compiled.

My favorite feature remains that it’s a universal build with a force-x86 binary called `python3.12-intel64` that makes it easy to create virtualenvs that are guaranteed to be Intel-base (and not ARM).

https://blog.glyph.im/2023/08/get-your-mac-python-from-python-dot-org.html
