It is somewhat tragic to read the accusation that proponents of #BIP110 are all paid shills—though it remains unclear by whom. It seems unimaginable, in the godless fiat world of those making such accusations, that someone could act without fiat incentives. Have they never heard of doing something simply because it is the right thing to do?

#BIP110 is all about the signal. It never claimed to stop spam, as the R in #RTDS stands for "reduced". It is another step to strengthen the decentralization of bitcoin again. Therefore, stop this infantile parroting that there will always be a way around to put spam in the chain, and start thinking several steps ahead. Imagine what the chain may look like in ten years if things do not change now.

Unfortunately, it seems obvious that the spam debate is a divide-and-conquer attack on the bitcoin community. Therefore, the aim must be to prevent node runners from picking a team by following the simplistic arguments of famous and corrupted sinfluencers and celebrities. Saying "it will fail" without providing a reason is not an argument. Instead, wide-ranging arguments interconnecting economics, psychology, and other fields should be presented so that node runners can decide for themselves. #BIP110

Activation of #BIP110 does not cause a permanent chain split. Therefore, people talking about selling one side of the fork are mistaken, as you cannot sell an unstable split (wipeout risk is a no go for exchanges). Furthermore, complaining about missing replay protection is misguided. If CoreV30+ wants to protect their spam chain in case of a temporary chain split—to make it permanent—then they have to hard fork themselves. The protestants (CoreV29-) will certainly not move there. So, posting this misinformation really reveals their desperation.

The store of value narrative, lending against bitcoin, treasury companies, ETFs, and making it harder to run a node are all attacks against the self-custody of your bitcoin. The end result is disowning you from your asset, as described in "The Great Taking" by David Webb, meaning you have at best an unsecured claim for your bitcoin. Is that what you want? If not, hodl your coins in self-custody and run #Knots with #BIP110 enabled.

Therefore, the community has to show proof of work to clean up the mess by running #Knots with #BIP110.

What is the point in complaining about SegWit, Taproot, etc., if you are not willing to act now by activating #BIP110 and correcting some of these mistakes made with those? Doing nothing means you end up with an unusable and centralized system in the long term. Apathy kills.

After the magic has gone in the world of treasury companies, shitcoin companies have crashed, the bitcoin price is in bear territory, and sinfluencers are cheering themselves up in self-help groups, it would be wise for miners and hashers not to double down in a masochistic way against the bitcoin community by blocking the activation of #BIP110.

Ignoring your users is fatal, and sooner or later you may have to reverse course to save the enterprise. Even large companies cannot do whatever they want—as the "New Coke" example shows, which was rejected by the market and forced Coca-Cola to revert to the old formula. This is even more true for an open-source network like bitcoin. #BIP110

The poverty of imagination of the played #BIP110 opposition on nostr is somehow amusing ;-) They are so lazy that they just invert some of the pro arguments, but it does not work that way. If you remove the shit—aka spam—from bitcoin, one cannot logically call the purified chain resulting from #BIP110 a shitcoin. The latter is a deviation from the monetary function of bitcoin.

The carnage among the dependent sinfluencers almost seems greater than that in the price. We will note who fought among our lines and ignore them after the activation of #BIP110. They will not get away with it; bitcoiners do not like cowards or opportunists. Their high time preference—prioritizing short-term stability to avoid obstructing present sponsors—will not pay off in the long run.

This restricts the independence of the journalistic work—here one could use the evil C-word, aka censorship—and may lead to pure propaganda. Furthermore, it shows a failure to innovate by adapting peer-to-peer cash into their media business, which is ironically the very thing they claim to discuss. #BIP110

Sponsored bitcoin media content is like dog food—the one consuming it and the one paying for it are not the same. This restricts the independence of the journalistic work—here one could use the evil C-word, aka censorship—and may lead to pure propaganda. Furthermore, it shows a failure to innovate by adapting peer-to-peer cash into their media business, which is ironically the very thing they claim to discuss. #BIP110

Linus Torvalds once said: "Talk is cheap. Show me the code." So, where is the code #ProductionReady? Cloning a repo is not a difficult task, but it is the first one and a visible one. The conclusion may be drawn that all of it is just obstruction if that does not happen soon. Especially if they criticize #BIP110 but do not deliver their promised alternative.

How strongly will the different factions defend their positions in the showdown of #BIP110? The spammers have high time preference and will probably move somewhere else. The miners have high capex, and if they are public companies, they have fiduciary duties; therefore, they will probably minimize risk and forgo the 1% spam fee revenue. Sinfluencer will continue to confuse some bitcoiners with censorship talk, quantum FUD, attack theories, etc., but those bitcoiners will feel betrayed when they realize that all these talks and theories do not serve them in the end. The protestants (core v29-) did not move much during the last year, and #ProductionReady did not yet deliver anything. However, some maxis of the BIP110 camp may fight hard, a.k.a. "dying on that hill." So, what is the probable outcome?

Nolens volens, accepting #BIP110 seems the rational thing to do for miners. The outcome to avert is a phase of temporary, chaotic, and unstable chain splits (price volatility, chain wipeout risk, etc.). The alliance between the progressives (Core v30+) and protestants (Core v29–) does not serve the latter, as they reject spam and shitcoinery as well. Therefore, an alliance with Knots and the BIP110 moratorium serves them better, and that ultimately forms the majority.

That one has to sacrifice the moneyness of money for the sake of its survival sounds stupid, but that is exactly what this talk about the "long-term security budget" is. No, we do not need the fees from spam transactions for bitcoin to survive; otherwise, it would have already failed. #BIP110

quoting
nevent1q…g7y5
There are alternative scenarios out there to the fee pressure (funded by spam) that must increase in order to finance big miners. A gold holder is responsible for the safekeeping himself. Therefore it is in the interest of Bitcoin hodlers to run their mining in the future as well and take responsibility for safekeeping of the time chain. With Bitaxe, DATUM etc. the community is slowly shifting towards that. Big miners listed on the stock exchange sounds quite fiat to me. This may be just an intermediate thing that may disappear again.

If #BIP110 fails, we drift into a lane leading to an unrunnable chain filled with garbage. This then leads to the KYC chain because it can only be run by a third party, and you may only use it when authorized by the gatekeepers. And with that, the bitcoin idea has died.

Ossification of the bitcoin protocol as any other protocol lies in the nature of a protocol as it gets embedded in more and more systems. Further development of the ecosystem will take place on layers above the base protocol. Therefore, being against #BIP110 because it may hinder further development is nonsensical.

Getting accustomed to an existing codebase is a time-consuming endeavor in software development. The fact that the girls hired for DEI purposes struggled to produce anything useful for a long time underlines this point. Developing in the open (book recommendations: "Producing Open Source Software" by Karl Fogel, "Working in Public" by Nadia Eghbal) cannot hide politics or mediocre performance for a long time. If a miner is relying on the additional fee currently generated by spam, then such a company is doomed soon anyway. The market gets more competitive with every halving, and these companies are the weakest link and are therefore eliminated first. Why should node runners subsidize such a dying business? #BIP110

Just to say "#BIP110 will fail" is not a real argument. At least you need to provide an explanation of why you think so — only then a debate is possible. Until now, I have not heard any real arguments from the opponents; just confused statements or ones that were refuted long ago. Is it just laziness or is it escapism?

Kicking the can down the road and doubling down on exponentially growing money printing or bailouts without solving the underlying problem is fiat mentality. So, yes, there is urgency in #BIP110 in fixing the issue with spam as bitcoin is not fiat.

Calling the proponents of #BIP110 a mob is quite un-American for an American to say, as the American Revolutionary War was precisely won by not following traditional "rules of engagement". For example, during the Revolutionary War, the Americans intentionally targeted British officers on the battlefield, which clearly contradicted European conventions at that time.

The podcast appearance of Giacomo looks like a smoke screen maneuver: a long-term maxi is openly criticizing #BIP110 and then later the host sarcastically asks if he is now a shitcoiner as well. But there are connections here: Todd. Older Twitter posts and shared appearances at meetups hint at a personal friendship beyond their professional interactions. //cc BitcoinIsFuture (nprofile…mycd)

In the current bitcoin crisis, not only are some corrupted and incompetent core devs the issue, but also some podcast hosts as well as some conference organizers, as they sacrifice the long-term future of bitcoin for short-term gains (high time preference) to produce regular content about unimportant sideshows. Business as usual is more important to them than thinking about the consequences of their ignorance. #BIP110

The same month, John Newbery hired a new co-organiser for Chaincode Labs' developer residency.

The man Newbery hired was Adam Jonas.

Jonas was not a protocol developer. He was a pro baseball player developer and scout before studying at the Flatiron School and then becoming their Director of Engineering.

He didn't just work at Flatiron. He was one of the first people the school trained, in its founding year, 2012.

Flatiron School is a New York coding bootcamp that makes DEI the explicit organising principle of its public identity.

Race- and gender-gated fellowships. A BLM-era DEI Taskforce. Cohort bonding sessions called "Feelings Friday."

A named core value: "Nurture Difference."

Newbery explained the Jonas hire in a Max Hillebrand Interview at Breaking Bitcoin Amsterdam in 2019: "Jonas's background is in education. He was working in the Flatine School and managing teams and projects there. So he has a lot of experience putting together these programs."

The qualification mentioned was programme architecture, from the Flatiron School.

"Feelings Friday" appeared at Chaincode's June 2019 residency. Sessions where cohort members process their emotions together.

Carla Kirk-Cohen, a 2019 resident, documented it on the What Bitcoin Did podcast 134 in August 2019: "We have Feelings Friday, at 4:30 on a Friday. We all grab a beer and unload our week's emotions."

Flatiron formalised the same named practice a year later.

Jonas carried it in.

Kirk-Cohen went on to be publicly named by Jonas as "our poster child" of the recruitment pipeline in an Adopting Bitcoin talk in December 2021. She subsequently joined the board of Brink, designated as an independent director.

On the Stephan Livera Podcast ep. 216 in October 2020 and The Anita Posch Podcast same month, Gloria recounts how Jonas cold-emailed her in January 2020 and urged here to apply again for a residency at Chaincode Labs.

She had applied to Chaincode the year before and been rejected. She had since lined up offers from Google and Facebook. She was about to remove all mention of blockchain from her resumé.

Jonas had been tracking her for over a year.

Jonas offered to set up a coffee chat at the Stanford Blockchain Conference with "some Chaincode Bitcoiners."

She said yes, and described how she expected to meet "nutty Bitcoin maximalists."

Instead she met John Newbery and Amiti Uttarwar.

Zhao sat with them for three hours.

Newbery told her, in what she recalled as his "very soft, British voice," that Bitcoin Core was "the most interesting project in the world."

Uttarwar told her to just clone the repository and try it.

She was accepted to Chaincode's residency that year, after meeting Amiti and John at the dinner. The year after being rejected.

Here's the thing... Uttarwar had followed the exact same path:

Rejected in 2018. Met Newbery at an Optech dinner in 2019. Accepted that same year.

Described here in a Coindesk piece "Amiti Uttarwar: Building Bitcoin's Future" from September 2021.

While Jonas was running the pipeline, he was also designing the institution (Brink) that would fund its output permanently.

Brink would become the single largest funder of Bitcoin Core developers. Over $17 million in documented donations.

The blueprint for it was written by the man running the residency, on his personal website, six weeks before it existed.

On October 16, 2020, Jonas published "Funding Bitcoin Development" on his personal site, arguing for a trusted nonprofit intermediary to fund Core developers.

Two days later he posted another blog post: "Starting a Bitcoin 501(c)(3)." A detailed operational blueprint. IRS process, approval timelines, legal gotchas.

Thirty-six days later, Brink launched.

It was presented as John Newbery's organisation. Jonas's name appeared nowhere in the public materials.

On launch day, Newbery told Jonas publicly: "Thank you for all of your help with Brink. Your initial research was what got the whole thing started."

That exchange is the only on-record acknowledgment that Jonas conceived it. It has never been addressed in any Brink public materials.

Six weeks after launch, Brink announced its first fellowship recipient.

Gloria Zhao.

The vote was cast by a three-person board: Newbery, Schmidt, and Harding.

The man who recruited her, mentored her, arranged her prior funding, and conceived the organisation was the man who cast one of the three votes.

No formal conflict-of-interest process is documented.

On the Anita Posch podcast, Zhao named, unprompted, the three people who brought her in:

"Amiti and Adam Jonas and John Newbery got me into Bitcoin Core."

Jonas's institutional influence and reach didn't stop at the recruiting pipeline and the funding.

In May 2024, Bitcoin Core's moderation guidelines were introduced at the weekly IRC meeting. The maintainer presenting them said: "ajonas wrote some moderation guidelines."

ajonas is Adam Jonas. Those same guidelines were used to mute Luke Dashjr on the OP_RETURN pull request and ban Antoine Riard from the Bitcoin Core repository entirely.

In July 2022 Gloria Zhao became a Bitcoin Core maintainer.

Only two and a half years had passed since her three hour coffee chat at Stanford with John Newbery and Amiti Uttarwar.

Typical time to reach maintainership is five to ten years.

On June 9, 2025, Gloria Zhao merged PR #32406, removing Bitcoin Core's OP_RETURN limit.

It was the most contested merge in recent Core history.

/end

Giacomo assumes they follow hash rate. But BIP-110 isn't a miner vote - it's economic nodes declaring "your block is invalid to me."

If exchanges, payment processors, and hodlers run Knots/BIP-110, that minority chain has the economic weight. Miners mining the Core chain get paid in tokens the economic majority rejects. The "rational" choice follows price, not hash rate.

Giacomo admits he doesn't run Core v30. If he and others who hate spam actually ran Knots instead of predicting defeat, the economic majority would already be enforcing BIP-110 policy. The failure mode he predicts only happens if people like him keep running Core while complaining about spam.

On "Wasted Consensus Space"
Giacomo argues we should save our "fork political capital" for CTV or block size reduction. This is backwards. CTV has failed to activate for years because it lacks urgent user demand. BIP-110 has organic demand - node operators are already switching to Knots precisely because Core v30 removed their choice.

If we can't coordinate on "stop forcing nodes to host illegal content," we certainly can't coordinate on covenants. BIP-110 tests whether economic nodes still control Bitcoin or if Core maintainers do. That's not a waste - it's a prerequisite for any future change.

On the "Fake Emergency"
Giacomo says spam is decreasing (post-ordinals). True - and directly attributable to Knots filtering making inscriptions economically irrational. The emergency isn't "spam is winning." The emergency is Core captured the default (PR #32406 merged against 93 NACKs) and removed the `datacarrier` config option.

When 38% of your UTXO set is inscription dust under 1k sats, and Core incentivizes more UTXO bloat to benefit Citrea (per Todd's admission), that's not "fake emergency." That's ongoing capture. Waiting until nodes require 128GB RAM to validate is too late.

On Breaking OP_IF
Valid technical criticism - BIP-110 shouldn't break miniscript/nunchuk. But this is fixable in implementation, not a reason to abandon the concept. The PR is still open; feedback improves it. Giacomo conflates "current draft has bugs" with "concept is bad."

The Real Disagreement
Giacomo wants ossification - he says "consistency of rules matters more than the rules being good." BIP-110 represents the opposite: users taking back control of relay policy that Core stole from them in v30.

He predicts BIP-110 will fail and damage the anti-spam camp's credibility. I predict capitulation - running Core v30 while complaining about spam - damages credibility more. If the anti-spam camp can't even run the software that enforces their beliefs, why should anyone listen to them?

BIP-110 might fail. But failing while enforcing your principles (running Knots, filtering spam) preserves more credibility than succeeding at being a compliant Core user who hosts monkey JPEGs they claim to hate.

Run Knots. Filter the spam. Let the hash rate follow the economy.

nevent1q…dh9q

In bitcoin, you should not pick a team based on the popularity of persons aka influencers. Doing so is like the terminal stage of the fiat disease. In Roman times that was called panem et circenses (“bread and circuses”). You should not choose your money based on the fanciness of the paper it is printed on. Instead, select your money according to its monetary properties. #BIP110

The block‑size war was only a battle in an ever‑ongoing war against control. If you want a permissionless and decentralized network, you have to fight every day. Bitcoin won’t die in a single blow; it will fade slowly and gradually over time. If maximalism dies, so will Bitcoin. #BIP110

#BIP110 is not a precedent. What would be the conclusion of applying the following quote often attributed to Voltaire "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." to the current spam debate in bitcoin in the sense that filtering is censorship and should be defended therefore? Since any action has opportunity costs it seems irrational to waste your time for such an endeavor solely for the sake of principle. I think preserving bitcoin’s survival and preventing its enshitification is more important.
