Yep, some years ago I tried to run PostgreSQL database on the Raspberry Pi 1st gen. It launched :drgn_blush_giggle: , but the performance was incredibly non-bearable.

Ooh, looks like constant exposure to the mine, well-formed and curated, Fedi timeline — finally led me to the cwm :drgn_aww:
The best window manager is non-existing window manager: no window decorations, hotkeys managed by the sxhkd, menus managed by rofi, nice effects managed by picom; simple X applications to display some necessary info: xclock for time, xbatt for battery info, gkrellm for some system stats.

The more time passed, the more my FreeBSD installation reminds OpenBSD, lol. Doas for privileges elevation, cwm as a window manager, got instead of git, etc :drgn_blush_giggle:

Isn't this some kind of Unix heritage? :drgn_think_confused: I see that for packages in my #NetBSD box it is a common thing: all rc scripts installed to somewhere like /usr/pkg/share/examples/… and package installation script suggests to copy them to the /etc/rc.d/ if I want to start them with /etc/rc.conf

I suppose, this is for package reinstallation without removing the rc scripts for them? :drgn_think_confused: I have some modifications in some scripts and they aren't lost after package reinstallation.

Maybe they think that it is more profitable to spend developers time for polishing Win/Mac drivers? Maybe they think that Linux/BSD people are not the main customers and the companies didn't get enough money per time to help with these opensource drivers? I dunno :drgn_think_confused:

Nice, with a great help of https://www.programmingfonts.org/ (URL was found in the lost toot of one fedizen), I finally found the ideal font which I was searching a lot — a monospace Serif font, which looks like font from a book! :drgn_aww:

A Monaspace Xenon font and a Monaspace Radon font (the last is hand-writing like monospace font). Luckily, the support of Cyrillic symbols was added in the latest version of font, literally few weeks ago.

Finally, my desktop is closer to the mine ideal :drgn_aww:

Wrote new article — about how to use some ThinkPad-specific keys with FreeBSD. Most of the Fn-keys and volume control separate keys could be uses "as is" — the OS passes the proper and well-known keycodes (like XF86audioMute, etc) to the X server. But some keys needs some "black magic" (devd and acpi_ibm kernel module).

The bonus point — how to use ThinkLight to signal about low battery level with Morse code :drgn_aww:

Checked all little utilities, which I'm using in my daily computing, are they still good old programs or slopware?

I prefer to use little programs, which were created to please the needs of it's creator. And/or some folks which has the same needs. The process of such little program creation usually, if author in sane state of mind, doesn't mimick process of commercial software creation, where developers need to rush to "deliver features" to please management and investors. For now this leds to forcing developers to use LLMs on the workplace — all to "deliver features" faster. So one developer for the same price (salary) able to make more features. Profit!

So, when I see how opensource programmer uses LLM to create some opensource program — it is a red flag for me and I'll try to avoid using such program. Because it means to me that programmer doesn't like the process of creation. Like an artist who don't like to draw or photographer, who don't like to make photos. Also, (s)he possibly has a "corporate mindset" (deliver value and features faster, no fun allowed). So, looks like his/her creature is not a pet, but a cattle. When I prefer to use "pet"-programs — usually they are nicer, simpler and doesn't bring me a lot of problems.

Results are pretty good — only three programs are slopware now. These three programs, installed from repositories of my OS, have versions, when these programs were coded by humans.

Here they are:

1) rsync — version 3.4.1 is good, but the next versions will be slopware, since programming happens with Claude LLM.

2) ImageMagick7 — installed good version 7.1.2-15. But since 7.1.2-16 it become a slopware. LLM the same — Claude, was used in one commit.

3) python3 — installed version 3.11.15. Since 3.13.6, according to commits and release dates, it become a slopware too — there are some commits, where the same Claude LLM was used.

Started to touch FreeBSD jail and Bhyve VMs, using them for some programming project. Damn, if only I have such unlimited power near 15 years ago, when I was in university!

Need to have a building environment with some libraries for FastCGI and PostgreSQL installed? No problem, write a Bastillefile which enables sshd and mounts my catalog with projects inside the jail via the nullfs magic. Then create thin jail, apply this template to it and boom — I have a ready development environment with ssh access and all necessary stuff. Just connect to it and build the program, all necessary sources are already here.

Need to test program on the NetBSD? No problem — just create Bhyve VM with preinstalled netbsd template, then install OS with comp set and setup some services: Nginx, PostgreSQL, spawn-fcgi, etc… Then type C-x d /ssh:drag0n@10.0.0.2:~ in the Emacs, copy sources via Dired and I can test my program on the environment, as close as possible to the my home server.

All things looks so integrated in the OS and console software are so good, that it is incomparable with my Docker trips at work :drgn_aww: When programming become fun again :drgn_hyper:
