I appreciate the feedback and the concerns here, but I want to point our that those changes are not for the sake of changing.

Our designer (and the various platform developers) are trying to solve many of the problems existing with those interface, while making space for some new features. All of this is deeply thought and discussed (internally, not sure how we could be more public on this) and designed in Figma (for all platforms) before implementation. Then changed if wrong.

In the past month, we started getting a few new accounts created on Notos (npub1ypf…53gr) every day, with valid email addresses (but not under the attacker control? confirmation emails are never clicked), random 15 letter usernames from residential IPs all over the world.

After checking a few online RBLs, I started using https://cleantalk.org/, checking the user IP on registration, and it flagged all of them. I did not knew this service before, but it seems both cheap and with good real time data?

As the end of year approaches, we spent some time to rework the Wrapstodon feature that we first tried last year.

It now collects your yearly data on-demand, does not require admins to enable anything (so it will be available to everyone in December 2026) and you get a nice shareable URL with your yearly summary!

Admins on nightly releases can enable it using the "wrapstodon" feature flag. It has been enabled on mastodon.online and mastodon.social

After many interviews with such organisations, the main roadblocks for them to join the Fediverse are:
- understanding what it is
- figure out their strategy (number of accounts, do they want their own server, define related policies…)
- figure out with their IT department if they want to host it (and if yet, how to do so), or delegate the technical parts to a 3rd party
- be able to open support tickets and know they will get an answer.

Now we can provide all of that 🎉

After a lot of work and discussions, I am very happy that we are finally announcing our hosting and support offerings to help institutions (cities, government, universities, corporations, non-profits…) get on Mastodon and into the Fediverse.

It will help the Mastodon organisation become more sustainable in the long run, but also provide an easy (easier?) path for those entities to come onboard and embrace open social media.

We are considering something to copy a part of your posts when you move your account, but this also create challenges (you loose your interactions obviously, private posts can’t be moved, and it provides a very easy path to load large volume bad content into an instance at once, so it would need to involve moderation checks)

We discussed "partial quotes" when working on quote posts, and decided not to explore this because you could easily change the text of what you are quoting to make it misleading but still attributed to the original author. Also it would probably have been good to have this discussion when we asked for comments, now we are deep into implementation and did not get much feedback when asked for it :(

Displaying quote posts will be in Mastodon 4.4.0, which we plan to release the first week of July (and is already deployed on mastodon.social).

Authoring quote posts will be in Mastodon 4.5, which will be released as soon as we finished this feature, probably at the end of summer. We are 70% done on quote posts and the hardest part is done (figuring out the protocol details to implement them in the Fediverse while giving control to users), now we "simply" need to finish the code

Yes this is very complex (and not specific to Mastodon, most if not all AP software suffer from it). We are very happy that a contributor offered to solve this, and are doing what we can to review their work and guide them so it is done with all the possible problems in mind.
We are still afraid that enabling this will create *a lot* of instance-to-instance trafic, but we will need to test it to see if it is too much.

You need to store/cache it on your own server so you dont create too much trafic for the remote server (which might not support the Mastodon API, so you cant really load directly from it with the app), plus you need to take care of blocks, post visibility & such. Then you need to figure out when to refresh the data, and how to handle long multi-level threads (that can span many instances).

PDQ is something that Meta has been pushing, but from the information I got, you want PhotoDNA, and it's algorithm is closed source (and under NDA).
I am not saying that the current situation is ideal (even if from our experience CSAM on well-moderated Mastodon servers is very infrequent) but mandating every website with UGC to do content scanning is the death of 99% of them. And the "free quotas" that you mentioned do not help at all except for the tiniest sites.

There is no way to scan this without increasing the costs greatly using a 3rd party service. And you can not do it yourself because the CSAM databases are all under NDAs and require a lot of legal agreements to even start have access to the algorithm (which is very closed source)

I started playing with DragonflyDB to replace Redis as the app data storage for a Mastodon instance. Redis used 22 GB of memory, DragonflyDB uses 8.5 GB.

That's very impressive, probably in part because Mastodon uses a lot of sorted sets (for timelines) and Dragonfly stores those in a much more efficient data structure, resulting in a lot less overhead (see https://www.dragonflydb.io/blog/dragonfly-new-sorted-set).

Today is my 2 year Mastodon anniversary! After decided to stop using Twitter I created my instance, invited a few friends and started discovering the Fediverse.

Then I tried to help where I saw that my skills could be needed and got hired to rework the project & mastodon.social infrastructures, then moved to a wider engineering role and here I am, 2 years later, working tirelessly to ensure that our beloved software and network thrive.

Another consideration: new installations should not allow open registrations by default. This should be a setting that the administrator needs to opt into, and this is a good place to inform them that open registration instances require moderation resources.

In Mastodon, we display a warning when the admin chooses this option. Mastodon also support requiring moderator/admin approval for new sign ups, which helps a lot in preventing automated registrations.

I would encourage every Fediverse software project to implement a “dead-man switch" on registrations: if nobody with moderator permissions has been active in the last week, then disable new account creation.

The Fediverse has a significant number of abandoned instances that are used by bad actors to create accounts and send spam.

After updating the Mastodon iOS app to build with XCode 16, we are noticing some very weird data corruption, but only in Release configuration. We suspect this is some data corruption in one of our dependencies caused by some compiler optimisation, but so far we have not really found out the cause.

At the moment, the best (and only?) way to know that an account deletion has been federated everywhere is to notify any known inbox / instance, for every account deletion.

This is very wasteful and not efficient, are there any alternatives? Has anyone worked on this?

This is not formalised right now, and there is no documented process for this (yet), mostly because we want to first see if this is viable (and that it will probably overwhelm the current team tbh), but for example npub1ecsgxp65xkwms3wx2fzk3p6qynneuqg7u682axx5utsfz7efdlds45u4wq (npub1ecs…u4wq) is doing it, and she has been able to do significant improvements to some parts of the code and those have been merged.

Opening PRs for large features without discussing with the core team beforehand will often result in the PR not being reviewed / accepted, as it will not implement things in a way that are okay for the core team, not be aligned with design, not take into account some other planned work and so on. But if someone wants to work on a specific feature, they can reach out and I will do my best to see if there is a way for them to work on it in a manner that it will get merged

We will not hire a "safety developer" or similar role (unless we get *much* bigger probably), and do not have a feature-by-feature budget. But we have a (fluid) roadmap, which includes safety features, and are working to grow the team so we have developer time to advance on the roadmap. This also includes having the time to think about such features, as they often are not as easy to implement that it can seem.
