The app is actually just the Nearhood website I saved to my iOS Home Screen 😄 notifications there are (unfortunately) not pure nostr nips or DMs as I wanted them to be locally requested and not encrypted (the DMs on nearhood are encrypted and gift wrapped).

You’d get notifications for events you have bookmarked, messages people send you (those are encrypted) and events you RSVP to, but it’s using a layer on top of nostr to handle those notifications

What do you think about the security vs convenience aspect?

I have a little nostr project for people who live in London who want to connect to their local communities (nearhood.co.uk), there I just generate nostr keys in a deterministic way using their device passkeys (so you’ll get the same account on your phone and desktop if you sync passkeys - or use a yubikey or something). Users don’t need to know what nostr is and they won’t forget their keys.

Downside of course is that they need to trust the website company not to steal their account by submitting the key to the server.. so there is a “trust” there..

but in theory this could perhaps be seen in the web console if one wanted to investigate it?

I definitely think we need to spread nostr by other means than just advertising the protocol itself. Even better if it’s being used without people having to know what it is!

Playing around with fetching skills and executing them locally on a phone. Limited use cases now but I think at some point you could fetch a whole “business setup” instruction and have an offline thing help you start something!

Here I fetched a WiFi QR maker skill from https://agentlist.com/listing/809df5a1-ea09-4ec6-9e2d-ac401103691c and it executed the JavaScript in it based on the text. Fully offline running the model on my phone. Quite fun. Now looking for more use cases!

I found Coracle before I found a reason to care about it.

What caught me wasn’t the interface. It was a single feature: the ability to add proof of work to posts. I’d read about NIP-13 on nips.nostr.com and thought it was clever. I just wished more people used it, because I’d never seen it anywhere. Until Coracle.

Seeing it running, actually doing something, produced a specific kind of excitement. The kind you get when a good idea finally gets its moment.

So I bookmarked it on my phones Home Screen, there was no native app. just because I wanted to use it. And suddenly I had four Nostr clients on my phone: one that was best for notifications, one that felt faster, one with the most features, and Coracle, because it had proof of work baked.

All of them exceptional, all of them the result of serious craft and genuine care, and all of them, if I’m honest, solving roughly the same problem. I don’t say that as a criticism. I say it as a question worth sitting with.

Then the amazing Nostria arrived, and SondreB added a fifth. But this one stopped me cold for a different reason. Not a new feature to collect, but a realisation: this protocol is so deep you could build an entire internet on top of it. Exploring it felt like stumbling onto a world under active construction, the way the Earth is being secretly rebuilt at the end of the Hitchhiker’s Guide, piece by piece, with quiet intention and enormous ambition hiding behind ordinary surfaces. I don’t think there is much you cannot do in Sondre’s Nostria.

Then I stopped and asked myself: how did I get here, and why did it get me excited?

I got here because I read a protocol spec. Most people never do that. They find a product because it solves something for them, and if they’re curious, they eventually lift the hood. But very few people fall in love with the engine first and go looking for a car to put it in. Builders do. Users don’t.

And if we want Nostr to spread, really spread, we have to build for users. That means resisting the urge to make another showcase. Another client that demonstrates as many NIPs as possible, another app where “Nostr-native” is the main feature. These things are exciting to us as builders and protocol enthusiasts, but they’re not the entry point for anyone else.

The entry point is whatever problem someone actually has. A tool that helps people find things near them, a way to coordinate a community, a place to share work and get feedback. Build that well, and quietly wire Nostr underneath it. Users don’t need to know, they need the problem they are having resolved. And then, six months later, they discover that the account they made on your app works somewhere else entirely. That they can take their history, their identity, their reputation with them, and that no single company owns any of it.

That feels like magic, and that’s when Nostr clicks for a normal person. Not when you explain it to them up front. I’ve been experimenting with this on two small test projects that are nowhere near ready for the world. Partly because I’m not the best hustler and partly because I may be infringing on some of the core ideas behind nostr (more on that later). but I secretly think that’s ok. Nearhood.co.uk is an attempt to connect people with their immediate neighbourhood: hiring the plumber next door instead of PlumbCo, finding the pub quiz that the security guard from Tesco also goes to. The kind of local fabric that used to exist before the internet flattened everything into platforms. Agentlist.com is a different experiment: a place to share agent skills in a usable, discoverable way. There’s a listing on there that defines how to write prose that’s actually enjoyable to read, and I used it to help write this one. Emphasis on help, as I hate “generatia” as much as the next guy. I mean what I write here. I hope it works and you are with me so far. In both cases, nearhood.co.uk and agentlist.com Nostr sits underneath, handling auth and distribution (and for nearhood, messaging), and neither app makes a point of saying so. I also, and here is maybe where people might disagree with my approach, used passkeys to deterministically generate a key pair for identity. Secured by your enclave on your device, and you don’t need to remember anything, unless it’s been 6 months and you discovered you can take the key with you. Then write it down.

Then: timing. because the timing matters enormously. We are in a moment where large language models can generate enormous amounts of code at speed. The danger is that everyone will implement the same basic things differently, each version slightly broken and each one a new surface to hack. Auth reinvented badly. Message formats that don’t interoperate. Distribution bolted on as an afterthought. Nostr arrived at exactly the right moment to short-circuit all of that: a clear spec for how messages should be structured, a working battle-tested approach to auth, and a distribution model that’s resilient by design and hard to compromise. Solid infrastructure for the next decade of software, already here, already proven. The builders who see this clearly aren’t the ones making more demos. They’re the ones quietly wiring Nostr into products that people will use for completely ordinary reasons, discovering later that they’re holding something much more powerful than they expected. There are people out there who don’t know they need Nostr yet. Let’s bring it to them.

Software is thinning in particularity, while orchestration is taking over. The value is more and more becoming how software can be organised and the moat is shifting towards orchestration, and then finally to the data alone. Salesforce sees this. With slack requiring not only a paid subscription, but a higher rate subscription to export all of the content an organisation has shared with them (including private channels), my gut feel is that they are hoping fewer and fewer orgs will use this feature, and instead opt in for Salesforce to do analytics on their internal data on their behalf. Granted, you have already decided to share your internal data with an external organisation, so employees in that organisation could find your discussions in their logs, but soon, if you decide to opt in to Slack's own advanced features, you'll likely expose higher level extracts of your data with another company too. A bad actor or insider no longer needs to sift through gigabytes of logs, they can simply read the "key takeaway" logs and get what they need quickly.

I propose now is the time for every small org to utilise data extraction features from their main stores of intelligence, be it Slack, Teams, Discord or others and start to understand how you can build your own AI features around them. You'll be in control of the logs for higher level abstractions, key decisions, main takeaways, and can tweak the "Clippy" to do what your organisation needs, and not let it become a generalised intelligence harvesting feature for content providers.

A great first setup, in my opinion looks like the following:

Extracts of your main data sources that impact eachother and can have cross references - let's say a support platform like Zendesk, a chat platform like Slack and a ticket tracking platform like Atlassian's Jira. These need to be full extracts - either get them via API or get full downloads on rotation.

Map these into to separate stores:

A Semantic Memory - turning messages into vectors so it can be searched through by meaning, rather than keyword match (look for "website broken" and find all instances of anything on the website broken too even if the word website wasn't mentioned.). We convert the input text and store "112394738...." (it's just a number), and convert the search text and look for ("112395738...") and find the match between those meanings.

A Knowledge Graph - a much more structured store where very precise "triples" are stored. Meaning here is distilled in the opposite way, we clearly restrict the content and make it easily understandable with very basic searches. We store: website - blocked_by - broken_payment_button

These two together become a powerhouse to build future solutions on top of and help navigate internal company data. By doing this ourselves we decide what AI model to use on them, and where it is hosted (maybe you host it yourself?), and when many enough do this it will be much harder for data processing companies to slowly shut the gates as they realise the main moat they have is your data.

Ok hear me out. Passkeys on your phone / google / apple sync. It seems to already provide quite a good deal of security for a seed. It works quite well to deterministically create NOSTR keys from those. No server hosting your keys, no bunker, no plugin that doesn’t work on iOS anyway, no background audio to enable remote signing, and cross browser capability. Don’t send the key - recreate it!

Maybe a security issue? But it doesn’t look like! What am I missing?

What’s missing now (and it’s a tiny one) is a sense of memory on how the agent has acted in the past, and a sense of acting only when it makes sense. At the moment many of these systems will make a change no matter how useful, and if it’s only marginally useful it might find that undoing the same change the next day is also an improvement!

After visiting a Generative AI conference in London last week I genuinely think there is misallocation of funds in big corps. There was a presentation on how to ensure AI agents stick to protocol and don’t hallucinate or come up with creative responses that are unexpected. To solve for this one had to build incredible amounts of test data, heuristic quality gates, non LLM based judge criteria etc. at every step of an agent pipeline.

Listening to the presentation, I was convinced their whole pipeline could have been built and run successfully just using those heuristic tests alone, and that sometime inside BigCorp, a few million was earmarked: “How can we do this with AI?” and not “Should we do this with AI?”

It felt a bit like listening to a session on how to ensure a genius multi disciplinary artist would excel at accounting.

User interfaces are going away

I think the end of interfaces is coming faster than most people expect. Not the gradual evolution we've seen before, from desktop websites only to two versions to dynamically resizing websites working on every screen size, but a complete removal of the interface altogether.

We're creatures of habit, returning to the same digital spaces - Netflix for this, Spotify for that, each with its own login, its own subscription, its own carefully designed experience.

We expect a certain experience from within all of these apps - but soon we will expect a certain experience one level above the apps.

Soon we won't browse Netflix or manage Hulu subscriptions. We'll simply ask for what we want and receive it, or even have it recommended to us based on various interactions we've had. The content finds us, not the other way around.

The technical shift is profound but the business model shift is even bigger. Today's walled gardens exist because companies need to own the customer relationship. Tomorrow, that relationship disappears - I get my content, whoever owns the rights to it gets paid, and I never need to care about who they are.

What enables this isn't just AI that understands our intent. It's payment infrastructure that can move money frictionlessly, instantly, to the right party without us managing accounts or subscriptions or even knowing where our content comes from.

Every streaming service, every media company, every platform betting on exclusive content and beautiful interfaces - they're all building for a world that's about to disappear.

The pieces are converging. Frictionless, vendor less, payments, AI that truly understands context, and a generation that values access over ownership.

I think now is the time to work with these things in mind, and create a decentralised, democratised system, based on solid foundations and open source

I wonder when, and I think it is soon, humans will start preferring to read, or will simply spend most of our time reading, AI generated pieces of text over human written ones. What’s maybe more interesting is perhaps what pieces of content will be the last to go, or will never go, and why?

We are inherently social creatures so the mere fact of knowing that some content was written by someone we trust, often trumps everything else - even the truth itself.

Content comes of all sorts - from news/information, entertainment (and the two are getting dangerously close these days) to pure propaganda. Now though, they can have two sources - a person or a system.

We need to prepare for a future where two categories of content live side by side and being able to distinguish them easily will be crucial.

Bringing public/private key cryptography together with an incredibly simple to understand UX will be a big part of this.

Would love to hear from others who are thinking about this too.

We are not yet there that we can autonomously build and run *quality* software purely by prompting, so everyone building software currently do need to understand and learn the basics. Too easy to auto-complete our way from understanding at the moment.

On the nostr apps, I’m currently working on a web app that uses nostr for login and interactivity (essentially a listing of software agents where users can vote, submit, discuss clients and implementations etc) - is that something you would consider an “app” that could be found and loaded from within notedeck, or are all apps essentially built _for_ notedeck? Right now I depend on the user having a plugin like Alby or nos2x to log in, seems more easy to do if it’s found from within something like notedeck!
