I don’t believe that UBI would make everyone lazy. Maybe many but not all. You still want upward mobility beyond the basic. If there’s no means testing and no risk of losing your base income you don’t need to worry about picking up work.

People keep saying software development was already “democratised” because all you needed was a browser, a computer, a text editor, and the desire to learn.
That only describes the entry point.
It does not describe the cross.
The cross of software development is not writing your first line of code.
It is carrying responsibility after the code exists.
It is:
maintaining systems long after the excitement is gone
debugging failures in production
inheriting undocumented architecture
handling dependencies that break beneath you
securing software against constant threats
testing behaviour before users pay the price
translating vague business demands into deterministic systems
carrying the operational burden of promises made in code
Typing code was democratized.
But correctness was not.
Reliability was not.
Maintenance was not.
Verification was not.
Accountability was not.
That is the cross.
AI may lower the barrier to participation. It may help more people write, read, and reason about software.
But if it does not help us carry the cross of maintenance, truth, and verification, then it only democratizes output — not responsibility.
The real future of software is not just more people generating code.
It is more people able to verify behaviour, carry accountability, and build systems that can be trusted.
The browser gave us access.
The editor gave us expression.
AI gives us assistance.
Verification gives us trust.
That is the cross of software development.
