Two Visions

The choice before us is between two visions of digital civilization.

Digital Westphalia offers smooth user experiences and comprehensive security through total surveillance. Every service works perfectly with every other because they're controlled by the same platforms under the same regulatory frameworks. Spam, harassment, and misinformation are eliminated through algorithmic filtering and identity verification. This is digital serfdom: convenience and safety maximized through complete elimination of privacy, anonymity, and individual autonomy.

The alternative, the Digital Renaissance, offers innovation, experimentation, and human agency through technological decentralization. Different communities build different tools reflecting different values. Users control their own data, choose their own algorithms, and participate in digital communities without surrendering autonomy to platform operators. This is messier, where convenience sometimes conflicts with privacy, where safety requires individual responsibility, and where freedom includes the freedom to make mistakes.

The Digital Renaissance requires active choice and sustained effort. This means choosing Signal over WhatsApp, Bitcoin over credit cards, Nostr over Twitter, and in some cases running your own infrastructure over cloud convenience. These aren't just consumer choices, they're political acts collectively determining what kind of digital future we'll inhabit.

The COVID-19 plandemic demonstrated how quickly fundamental freedoms can be suspended for emergency management. The information control infrastructure built during that crisis remains in place, ready for activation whenever authorities determine unfettered communication poses risks to public safety, social stability, or political order.

The next crisis, pandemic, climate emergency, financial collapse, or geopolitical conflict; will test whether that infrastructure becomes permanent or can be dismantled in favor of systems preserving human agency even during uncertainty and fear.

The future of human freedom may well depend on which vision prevails.

All taxation is theft regardless of the justification and to me justifying any tax is illogical because the taxes are mostly paying interest on debt which you never consented to or were consulted on when it was taken. You can justify paying the mafia to not destroy your business or break your kneecaps but it doesn't make it any less evil. The state is a gang of thieves that have ascribed to themselves monopoly on violence and even the so called protection isn't done well. You are better off hiring mercenaries or private security guys to protect your property, which brings me to the real question what are you actually paying for? You don't need the state to enforce property rights or conduct arbitration. I think what you are describing is different because it's not knowledge that makes you separate from a particular group of people, but misalignment in values. No one person knows everything, so we are always going to be learning from each other in some shape or form. Note: This was originally just a snippet I was using as a reminder, but I thought it would be a good idea to publish it, as it only cost me a nak command! 💪

💾 Pre-requisites

To follow this guide, you'll need: - A Unix-like system (linux, macOS) with a bash or similar (zsh, etc) shell. - nak installed in your $PATH.

📁 Preparation

First, you'll need to prepare the eventual illustrative material that you'll need for your article.
The easiest way is to host the images (and videos) on a Blossom relay/server, but you could also use IPFS (as long as you are able to pin the files on a persistent node), or direct traditional hosting.

📝 Writing

Write your article, using Markdown formatting, in a .md file, with your preferred editor:
nano -Sail my_article.md
Don't include your article's title, as it will need to be defined in a special field of the Nostr event at publication time. You should only have level 2 heading (##) or higher level.

📤 Publication

Set a few environment variables that will be needed for publication and/or eventual erratums:

You can replace / add as many relays as you want. Ideally, those should be the same as the NIP-65 "write" relays of the author.
For the actual publication, you'll be prompted to enter a private key, or better, avoid copy-pasting clear private keys and use a ncryptsec (NIP-49).
The event ID and created_at fields are automatically computed, and if some of the relays require authentication the --auth option ensure it is performed prior to publish.
The --pow argument is optional and is used to compute a Proof of Work according to NIP-13.

📝 Edition

To edit your article (even if it has already been published), you can simply re-publish it with the same ARTICLE_ID, as kind 30023 events are "replaceables", the relays will simply keep the most recent version of a single "d" tag (unique identifier). Just edit the my_article.md file with your corrections / additions (you can also bring corrections to the TITLE or ARTICLE_IMAGE if you want/need to), and then:

Final thoughts
