When I was back in Seattle I found myself randomly talking to a man from South Carolina and we were both thinking of moving back South/East because random friendly stranger conversations happen, and that wasn&#39;t really socially acceptable in Seattle region in my experience. I think Nostr has some projects in the works like Housestr that could step in to help organize these types of logistics. I&#39;m purposefully setting up my own home so I have guest spaces for folks. I think this is going to be the way to help people live very cheaply so that they can one day contribute resources to land purchases and hopefully host their own young folks. <br/><br/>So I do submit for your consideration of moving: the Shenandoah Valley. We&#39;re geographically protected on all sides by the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountains, making for gorgeous hiking and swimming opportunities. Cities like Staunton are small enough that I could walk from one end to another, densely packed with fantastic restaurants and cafes. And then within a 15 minutes drive it is country-country. We&#39;re far enough away from the megalopolis on the seaboard that when SHTF the zombie hordes would have a hard time reaching us, but close enough that I can still get to an airport for a business trip. <br/><br/>There&#39;s still poison ivy and humidity, although I find it bareable and better than when I lived in more lowlands. They need way more legroom and temperature moderation in the root zone then even a very large pot can provide. Plus I’m certain that the actual connection to the Earth is part of the equation.  In year one, I got 80 pounds of tomatoes off seven plants that all reached almost 6 feet in height, in an open-bottomed 8’x4’ bed that currently holds my cucumber and squash trellises. This year the only tomato plant that is thriving is the one whose roots are free to go anywhere they like. The ones in pots, even very large 5 gallon containers, are visibly stressed the same as the ones in 3 gallon pots were last year. At first I thought it was a soil problem, but I’ve done everything right in that regard in these pots and they just don’t like it.  when these black pots get irradiated by sun all day, the temperature in the root zone can easily reach 80°F and it’s amazing how quickly they become root bound. I will still get some yield off of these but their big brother in the bed is going to put them to shame. <br/><br/>It’s all part of the process of working out the kinks in a small setting so that when we move to a space with some serious production capability, I’ll have figured many of these things out. On Sunday we are going to look at a nearly 6 acre partially forested place with animal corrals, fencing around the perimeter and loads of growing space. Designs are made for builds and engineers get a % of official quoted cost when applying for a permit to build. The property owner is trying to understand the cost of a build by negotiating with an engineer who is incentivises to maximise the cost. It&#39;s fucking stupid right now. Example: have a friend who just built a house and they&#39;re friend did the costing honestly. The actual build has come out at around 950usd/sqm. If you go and get quotes from building companies right now, the range of quotes for the same thing is 1300 to 2500. Obviously, market forces kick in due to the moral corruption of malincentives and I know of people who&#39;re just delaying until it comes back down. It&#39;s driven by lots of foreign money coming in and probably a lot of money laundering. Fascinating to watch but very frustrating. The worst thing is, there&#39;s a luxury property tax and it&#39;s based on that registered figure so you could suck it up, accept the grift and just say yes but then you get a nice tax on top.
