ChatGPT actually swears now lol that's fun
Yeah because you can't really monopolize FOSS by nature. You don't have exclusive use of the thing you're trying to use to monopolize things.
I'm sure the counterargument to this would be Android, but Google is making it more and more closed in order to secure a monopoly.
Android as an open source project is something anyone from GrapheneOS to Amazon can use to fork their own operating systems.
The same principle applies to any FOSS.
So the main risk of a corp doing FOSS is the (logical and healthy) suspicion that they won't actually stick to FOSS principles in the long term because it doesn't benefit them, with Google being a prime example.
The other side of this coin however is that genuine community run FOSS projects can force big corps to embrace them when they gain a market share. For example, Microsoft has had to increasingly embrace Linux in recent years. I'm sure they really hate doing that because they spent decades trying to force FOSS competitors out of the market and failed. Now they have to play nice to stay relevant.
I guess the only conclusion I can come to is it's a complex issue that can go many ways. Corps getting involved in FOSS can be problematic in many cases, but in many other cases it's neutral or good for the consumer. Depends on the dynamics at play.
But maintaining a monopoly through software that is by definition open for anyone to fork is quite a difficult thing to do - you don't really have a market advantage from adding new functionality since as soon as you do, your competitors can straight up merge your implementation into their own codebase.
But Amethyst isn't a mega corp, it's more analogous to Linux. Linux absolutely has a monopoly over servers for instance, but this isn't problematic because there's a million different distros.
We back boys

Oh that's sick. What classics are your favourites?
Have to admit I don't have much knowledge when it comes to American motors beyond thinking muscle cars are really cool. Especially those classic Mustangs.
Man people are getting hostile over BIP-110. Is there some context I'm missing or is it just a case of people revelling in drama?
Guy had an idea he thought would improve Bitcoin.
Not enough people agreed.
It failed.
Why we fighting each other? We have different visions for how Bitcoin should be developed but we're all on the same team at the end of the day.
I don't get the hate. The system worked as intended. Why's it gotta be toxic?
Seems to me bro had good intentions and wanted to improve Bitcoin because he believes in it as we all do. Isn't that why we're all here?
Fwiw, I run Knots on my node but it's the pre-RDTS version. Didn't wanna risk a soft fork on my personal node.
Ime it's a mix. There's definitely some people who are like that for sure. But there's people I've met at Bitcoin meetups who are chill af.
I wouldn't be put off going to meetups just because some people are obnoxious. If I lived by that rule I'd never leave my house haha.
It will depend heavily on where you live though ofc. If you're somewhere rural there's a lot more cliques, or just hardly anyone there. But if there's a city nearby it's worth a shot at least once.
Just my two sats.
Any car enthusiasts here? Thinking very strongly about buying either an E22 or G42 M240i for the B58.
Luckily I never bought one. But I have BIP39 even on my hot wallets. Can never be too careful out there.
The first two Fast and Furious movies truly are peak 2000's action movies
Also: use a strong BIP39 passphrase.
Obviously still able to be bruteforced, but at the very least acts as a buffer to buy you time in exactly this type of situation. And an opportunistic attacker wouldn't have reason to keep trying to brute force it once they're in the main wallet to begin with.
Even in the case of an attacker who knows you have one, if you have high enough entropy, e.g. multiple words, that can be the difference between being vulnerable or not.

If Coldcard taught us anything it's that you shouldn't blindly trust something is secure just because the code is on GitHub.
Feel bad for any plebs who had their wallets breached though. And I hope the Trezor guys compile their firmware correctly...
That is simply not acceptable at this point!

"The British state has definitively become the enemy of the people."
"Reverse statism and bring back individualism."
That's what I wanna hear.

SHA-256 is an industry standard. And in 2009 it was one of the strongest cryptographic algorithms available. It was a very logical choice.
That's a pretty niche proposal. You should legit email it to Rupert.
I read the entire PDF and it sounded like the words of a man who has a solid understanding of Austrian economics. He explains his logic and reasoning clearly, he doesn't just throw out soundbites.
Don't get me wrong, it's obviously entirely possible he's a liar. But I didn't come to that conclusion from the policy paper or the many interviews I've watched with him.
Lowe has specifically called out BlackRock in interviews and he wants to ban kosher slaughter. I see no evidence of him being a Zionist.
A company owned by a holding company he was invested in made PCR tests and claimed forlough. He didn't make those decisions unilaterally and he didn't just pocket all the money. Iirc, he didn't even have oversight of the company's day to day operations.
And the reality is the company has a fiduciary duty, you can't just tell shareholders "yeah we're turning down money because of Rupert's moral beliefs."
Also I'm pretty sure the claim about the government contract is misinformation. They were sold to the private sector. There wasn't an NHS procurement contract.
Farage is 100% controlled opposition for sure.
Lowe on the other hand, I actually think he's for real.
Why not? I'd understand the concern if it was a corporation trying to monopolise everything but this is an open source project. It's all FOSS.
If you're already familiar with git you can work out how to use it.
Happy to write tutorials once I'm done with my GrapheneOS one though!
Amethyst is Android only I'm afraid. Damus is the main iOS Nostr client. Wisp looks promising too. But they don't have the massive wide range of functionality Amethyst does.
I gotta keep up some level of hope for the future man. I'm not a naive idealist but good things can happen. Milei hasn't been taken down yet after all.
I have the same fear unfortunately. I'm guessing you're familiar with the Titanic Federal Reserve conspiracy. I get you.
But even if he only gets to do a small fraction of what he wants to do in terms of economic policy, he will massively improve the country.
There's so much added to Amethyst since the last time I looked around it, PoW for events and BOLT12 support are great, but I was not expecting an integrated git client!
Props to @nprofile…vhl6 and the many contributors to the project, this legitimately is an "everything app."

I've linked the PDF so you can see for yourself. He's increasingly been talking about sound money even in his mainstream social media posts and videos, and in the PDF he specifically calls out the issues with fiat currency and proposes a return to the gold standard. This bloke is the real deal.
"Sound money is one of the essential foundations of a prosperous free society."

Latest Amethyst update has a UX update for foldables and tablets, love it.

It gets a lot better, well worth watching
It's a shame Banksy turned out to be a part of the system in the end
Holy fucking shit I had to read this twice to make sure I wasn't dreaming... Rupert Lowe wants to end fiat currency and bring back the gold standard.

If I can put a Bitcoin wallet on this I legitimately might buy one. That's so fucking sick.

Operation Hail Mary is legitimately a great movie, no in your face ideology just a human bro and an alien bro doing science shit in space
What do you guys use for posting long form content on Nostr these days?
Habla News seems to be dead. I used https://write.nostr.com last time which tbf is very clean and works well as a basic markdown editor but for images and media I had to upload manually somewhere else and paste links in.
Anything else you guys use and would recommend?
Works now after restarting my Tor connection. That's weird since it isn't set to load media through Tor just the relay connections. Maybe because it's a Blossom server the initial resolution is done over Tor or something. Anyway it was definitely an issue on my end.
If there wasn't such a crazy heatwave over here I'd give it a go as well 😂
Maybe the CDN is blocking my VPN or something 🤔

It's on the sidebar under feeds if you scroll down about half way. Look how many other things there are as well!

Funniest relay domain I've seen so far 😂

Image doesn't work for me. Domain seems to be down.
Agree completely. I run Knots on my node. If someone wants to write arbitrary data to the blockchain, they can go use a shitcoin and waste blockspace there.
Bitcoin is for separating money from the state, not being a database for random bullshit.
And I've never ever sold Bitcoin for fiat in my life and I never will.
I did not know Amethyst let you track workouts and walks. Nostr really can just do anything.
https://npub17rlc0emedw5xljztfqrmykjaacsx6ujvdas64zznjadrnhhwlavq4jjtgg.blossom.band/dbc14b1898877487772ee3f621e8916dce7c7f82e54955dd224eba5112c86260.jpg
If someone has a history of scamming I assume their views of Bitcoin are "whatever benefits my own self-interest." That's logical to me, you don't usually get scammy people who are driven by ethics in other areas of their lives.
Of course, do your own research and form your own opinions, but there's nothing I've seen about the Cardones that isn't shady personally
They're talking about the Covid lockdowns and vaccines now too.
I fucking love Rupert Lowe man, not a single thing he's said in this interview so far I disagree with.
"From adversity comes success."
Rupert Lowe
Gary Cardone is a straight up scammer

Sorry for the delay with the GrapheneOS guide. I have been very busy and stressed at work so by the time it gets to the weekend I just wanna turn my brain off.
And I don't wanna post a shit half arsed version. I want it to be high quality content.
Working on it today. *Hopefully* it'll be posted this evening. It **will** be posted soon.
Now he's going into the Fabian Society 👀
Brought some stickers with me last night

Important point to distinguish for sure.
However, one is simply a first step to the other.
