In practice defaults carry massive weight, regardless of the fact that people can choose not to run it (and then those that do choose not to run it get socially attacked).\n\nIt is rational for them to feel like they are being _coerced_ into storing\narbitrary data.\n\n\"You're node is not data storage.\"\n\nThis is literally false. Nodes are data storage, the only debate is about what kind of data is permissible.\n\n\"It is also not a vote.\"\n\nIf 100% of the nodes enforced new rules then those rules would be respected.\n\nLogically we can step down from 100% and fine some number where the rules would be respected.\n\nHow is that not a vote?\n\nIt's not a vote manifest in the protocol, sure. Nodes are quite literally the governers of the network.\n\nThe 'network' is a graph of nodes that distribute transactions and enforce the consensus rules.\n\n\"Why does you setting up a node give you more say than a miner investing millions [into capex].\"\n\nThe whole point of Bitcoin is that it's too capital intensive to attack.\nTo maintain it's properties it _must_ be the case that plebs outweigh the\nconcentrated economic interests.\n\nIf capex beats sovereignty, then we lose to the money printer.\n\n\"You run a node for your own economic interests.\"\n\nYes exactly.
