Rand Paul's longstanding efforts to have him prosecuted, adding that the senator's recent release of his private writings, in which Fauci mused about his fame and the origins of COVID, reinforced his decision. Despite Fauci's repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment, Republican senators continued questioning him about NIH-funded research and the origins of COVID-19. During the hearing, Paul's staff also had Fauci's attorney, David Schertler, escorted from the room after he repeatedly attempted to interject and invoke Fauci's Fifth Amendment rights on his client's behalf.
