Many theories have been proposed, with the one you laid out being one of the more popular ones. In 1990, there was no market demand for an iPhone. In 2020 (just 30 years later), you have a different story. My point being: until a solution finds and/or is permitted to fix a problem, it would be a fool's errand to get into every nuance of what an alternative system would look like.
