The praise I hear for Nolan is usually related to things that I find only secondarily important in film behind primary concerns such as (but not limited to) plot & characters.

Typically praise for Nolan centers on a few narrow aspects of the visual presentation of a film. For all the praise of his visual prowess, it's not like he's known as a master of subtle detail or creating a feeling of depth & history in his worlds.
