In my country we pay already not 40% but around 45-47% for all kind of social security, work force and other taxes even before we get our salary. AND then when using the money we got, we pay VAT on everything we purchase (24%), on fuel we pay not only VAT but also fuel excise 7%, we have a car tax twice a year, land property tax, green energy support tax on electricity used, also separate tax for power grid “maintenance”. Probably I forgot some tax :)
