The only way I can make it make sense is realizing that all politicians are actors selling narratives and lining their pockets. The degree to which they are successful in the former, a function of how compromised they are. The degree to which they are successful in the latter, a function of how useful they are to the lobbies that they serve. And in neither scenario is the group they serve, the people they govern.
