I would add to the enlightenment another important factor, and that is christian forgiveness. It might sound strange, but what I mean is the end of "honor culture" where a death can only be repaid by another death. That way of doing justive gives you arabia of today. A desert where no one wants to live and where peopl are very backwards.
By killing off honor culture, society frees up resources and becomes enormously more productive.
