It's not 2%, it's probably closer to 30% but you don't see them because they're spread out across different ideologies. You have to add up the wignats, libertarians, antifa left, open source developers, crypto community, etc. Internet shutdowns are a problem for ALL of them, so a lot of people would activate.
And then on regime stability, their risk is not some kind of popular uprising (those really don't exist), their risk is that someone like Elon might say "hey, you know what? I could become king" and then all of the sudden shit goes kinetic when the day before there was absolutely no sign whatsoever that anything like this might happen.
Because OF COURSE, anyone who might consider planning a coup d'etat will swear up and down that they would never never never never never even so much as daydream of such an idea - until one moment they're holding a rifle to your head...

They may be less risk averse than I imply, but the sheer number of fronts they would have to be willing to begin fighting on, in order to actually shut down the internet is enormous. And "shut down" is really what we're talking about, everything short of a full on nuclear option shutdown is just going to cause mass migration into the darknet.

IT'S OUT, maybe my biggest blog post to date.
Ever since the recording industry capitulated ending the P2P War, internet freedom has been SO GOOD that research into decentralized networking has practically stalled. Throughout the Western World, you can just stand up a website and post almost anything.
And because of that, nobody has been particularly motivated to move off of centralized ICANN DNS, IPv4, and x509 Certificate Authorities.
Now, governments are thinking about changing that. And while the apocalyptic amount of force it would take to actually end the open internet is almost certainly beyond them, the force it would take to end the era of bad centralized protocols could almost be applied by accident.

Beyond just abandoning computers, if you're trying to keep secrets you can improve your odds by putting most of your computing behind a firewall and blocking anything that isn't explicitly what that stuff is supposed to be doing.
The narrower the definition of what information is allowed, the better.
If you can completely airgap your main systems (cut them off from internet), that's even better. But even airgapping is not perfect, Stuxnet spread as a virus in order to get onto USB sticks that were plugged into Iranian (airgapped) computers and then hack them.
But if you're not as high profile as a nuclear program, airgapping works pretty well...
At the end of the day, computers really don't keep secrets all that well. But there's a way to leverage that - instead of being the one trying to keep secrets, it's better to be the one who is trying to expose the other guy's secrets. Computers love to leak, so if you like leaks then you're on the right side of technological history...

This is kinda dumb.
There's a really good way to make random numbers:
You make a pool of entropy, you take entropy from your environment (e.g. timing how long things take), and you hash it into the pool.
Then you use a hash function to read values out of that pool.
None of this is complex, it's not slow either, and it's how things have been done for decades.
Everyone pushing for mOrE SeCuRe random sources is to be considered with the greatest of suspicion.

KW per cm2 would be fine. I know intuitively what is an inch, a pound, a KG and a cm, but I do not know what is normal atmospheric pressure (except I know as a trivia question that it's 15ish PSI). It's like a fish doesn't know what it is to be wet.
Pressure matters when it pushes on something, so you want to know what will be the force based on the size of the something...

The efficiency difference is insane as well.
1 acre of corn = 500 gallons per year give or take
1 acre of solar = 300,000 kwh/acre/year.
Even just the chemical energy of ethanol is 22kwh/gallon so that's 11,000 kwh - i.e. 1/30th the energy.
But when you consider the poor efficiency of internal combustion, it's even worse. An average car might get 30mpg, but an average electric has 300 miles of range on a 100kwh battery - so 3 miles per kwh.
Welp, now 1 acre of corn = 15,000 miles
1 acre of panels = 900,000 miles...
However, I still think solar should prefer dual-use property (commercial, parking lots, etc), and then after that, marginal land, and only after that, farmland.

With the evolution of batteries, it looks as though internal combustion engines will be relegated to some pretty narrow niches - if not supplanted entirely.
But there's something about them that EVs can never really replace, and it doesn't seem to even have a name. Internal Combustion Engines are "alive" in a way that electric motors can never be.

If you say like an olympic swimming pool sized pond - kind of the biggest you're going to get if you're having to dig it yourself - and then 300 feet of drop, that only equates to about 500 kWh of storage. And 500 is a lot, but it's like 5 long range tesla batteries. It's not "infinite", and it's probably not the kind of storage you're imagining when you think about building a storage project.

The biggest takeaway I've gotten from this is for the time, pain and suffering to generate ~1 KW, you could put in like 30KW of solar... And sure 30KW doesn't actually generate 30KW continuous, but it generates more than 1, and sure the sun isn't available all of the time, but you also can't just drain your pond all of the time...

Batteries and solar are two emerging technologies which have exactly this kind of behavior - which is why I'm very bullish on the future of these technologies.
I acknowledge the problems, and particularly that geothermal and nuclear are WAY BETTER from first principles. But the thing is, there's insane amounts of R&D going into solar and batteries, so they're evolving FAST, while nuclear and geothermal have relatively little R&D and so they're stuck in the doldrums (for now).

Flash memory invented in 1984.
This is a great example of a technology with a slow innovation curve, but one that would eventually come to replace a lot of other things.
If you were smart, you would have known that (for example) tape based video cameras were going to be disrupted when flash memory hits enough density.
These things are tricky to think about because in many cases the growth curve is exponential, so something goes from "few kilobyte Nintendo cartridge" to "multi-terabyte SSD on a stick" in the matter of 4 decades.
These things are important to see and keep an eye on, because they are sitting there in plane sight, but most people don't pay attention - and they change how the future will look.

Wild that literally nobody makes these things anymore.
20 years ago they were everywhere, $100.
Now there's no factories left. All of the high voltage electronics are kind of bespoke and there aren't really supply chains for them anymore, but you COULD make them again.
The real kicker is the tube, the color mask and phosphor coating is a disaster. And what's more, the machines that made them are now archaic. Even if you were able to get one, keeping it maintained and working properly is a skill unto itself. Generally production engineers will always build new lines using only current era (CNC) machines for which the spare parts and knowhow are widely available.
This is an important little lesson that technological capabilities are not to be taken for granted. 20 years is long enough for a technology to really basically just vanish and once it's gone, you would need to go through a whole new R&D process if you ever wanted to bring it back.

Recently I've been wrestling with two thoughts:
1. Low intelligence people should not really be thinking about politics.
2. Post-scarcity (in it's current form) has lead to this kind of Rat Utopia world that is probably WORSE than it would be living in harder times.

The problem with low-intelligence people getting their hands dirty in real political issues is that realpolitik is pretty anti-social, and if you're going to be anti-social, you'd better be smart. Because otherwise you are highly likely to end up doing the work of your enemies.
If you are not that smart, you are much better off adopting a Robust worldview. What robustness means is that even though you're not going to be particularly effective, you are also fairly hard to manipulate.
Consider for example two 85 IQ people, one is an alt-right antisemite and the other is a Catholic / one-race-human-race / milquetoast centrist. The alt-right guy is FAR more likely to end up getting sucked into a plot to bomb the federal building and destroy the records for the Clinton investigation - or something like this.
The Catholic may be wrong, but he's robust against doing something stupid.
So as a result of this, we should expect that politics-du-jure will ALWAYS be fairly dumb, and real political discourse will always be a relatively elite activity. [Figure 1 (different Caleb)].

The second issue is that humanity is really bad at dealing with post-scarcity. The way we're wired is "have idea" -> "test it" -> "works = reward" / "fails = punishment".
We optimize our ideas to maximize reward and minimize punishment, but when we are too successful we risk creating a situation where the punishment is socialized and deferred to the point that it's no longer noticeable, and then the feedback loop breaks.
When there's no more punishment, then every idea "works" which means every idea is a "good idea". This is kind of the premise of the Rat Utopia experiment, in which a colony of mice were given a post-scarcity environment and as a result they took on a number of strange behavioral traits, particularly, they stopped breeding and underwent population collapse to the point of extinction.
The "good news" is that this can only happen as long as the post-scarcity is able to be maintained. We humans will always eventually destroy the infrastructure that enabled the post-scarcity, have a civilizational collapse (like many before), and then go back to building again. Without some outside force protecting the infrastructure, we can never truly go extinct.
You often hear people talking about "bring on the meteor" [Figure 2]. I think the real desire is not so much to go EXTINCT, but rather to bring back Hard Times - because the Good Times have become so un-good that even Hard Times would be better.

If it's really like that then there must be another element of - maybe like intellectual laziness, regarding differentiating real from imaginary.
I remember hearing that John Nash stopped taking drugs and instead he just flat out decided to stop entertaining his hallucinations, so I guess in some cases it's just that simple.

The logic around this gets super weird, which makes the wisest thing be to only conscript men who are already "willing to go" (you know what I mean)...
The problem is that going to Iran is a guaranteed death sentence, and most people more-or-less know that.
So, say you start firing people from their jobs, well, what if Iran wants to play hard ball and start giving cash (Monero) bounties for dead IRS agents? You're out of your job, you can go die, commit suicide, become homeless, or kill some Shaniqua. You probably won't get caught because there are thousands of other people like you thinking the same thing. And if you do, there's no meaningful punishment they can give you that is worse than dying in Iran.

Yeah, CAFE is one issue. Also you will notice that in America you can't buy a car from anywhere in the world except American colonies: Germany, Japan, Korea.
Volvo is an exception, and there are of course the oddball Italian supercars that make it in, but generally speaking anywhere that the US didn't fight a war, Americans can't buy cars.
I live in France and I occasionally see BYDs on the road here...

Unions can do that, yes. Particularly in Illinois where it's all just mafia.
But I think America's problems go deeper than this. The Americans who are willing and able to do real work and care about customer needs have been systematically shut out of the workforce for political reasons. And those who remain have been trained not to care about efficiency and customer needs, but instead about social causes.
In China, hard work and customer focus are specifically promoted by the central government. They have their own corruption problems, and over the next 100 years, the US is probably going to do better, but right at the moment they're ahead...

Finally watched the video. They're subtweeting BYD pretty hard, I don't think that's proven yet at all.
I think companies like Ford and Chrysler are not being serious about serving their customers, so BYD's sub-10k offerings might be trash and they might be quite decent for the money.
Also the notion that the only reason these are cheap is China govt subsidies is not really true. Dacia sells sub-10k vehicles in Europe and they're not "good", but they're are decent enough that taxi companies use them.
The idea that a car starts at 30k is an American phenomenon.

Yeah, this is a real problem, and I'm not sure there's any real incentive to stop it.
IMO it's not specifically the fault of EVs, but rather that as reliability improves, people stop caring about repairability. Even back in the 80s when they started cramming everything under the hood, timing chains that are ~impossible to service, etc.
You might imagine that delivery companies, taxi companies, cop fleets, etc will insist on buying cars they can service - but even for them, if the vehicle lasts 10 years without trouble, they might just not care.
Problem is, new car buyers are stupid, and they trade in every 5 years or so, so reliability after the first decade is not their problem. Maybe if the used market commands 20% of the car's initial cost, that matters, but if the car company can cut cost by 20% by making it impossible to maintain, it's a wash. And the company could also buy back used cars to support the market - even though they're junk.
For the car culture this is hell. You can put together an LS rig, and you can put together a rig on top of a commodity electric chassis, but in either case this is something you have to completely build yourself. Seems like there's just nothing comparable to Fox Body or Camaro ecosystem anymore...

Leaf batteries lid is glued on with some kind of sealant. There are a few ways to cut it so you can pull the lid off.
But yeah, some EVs have the battery integrated into the chassis, so replacement is flat impossible.

See point 5, in the early days that was widely expected to happen, but batteries actually exceeded expectations.
The age out period seems to be about a 10-20 years (before the battery life degradation starts to make the car annoying to drive).
You can just look at used EVs for sale and look for the remaining battery capacity (the computer reports this). 90% in a 10 year old car is not uncommon.
Anything you drive daily, you're going to spend more on fuel than on the car itself, so in the (say) 15 years of battery usable life, you've saved more than enough gas money to buy a new car.
And if you live in the north where they salt the roads, you are saving absolutely nothing because the rest of the car has the same lifespan.

With oil getting expensive, and looking to only become more and more expensive, I've been doing a little bit of research on electric cars lately. Here are some of the things I've found:
1. Gasoline engines are about 30% efficient (diesels about 40%). Gasoline has 36 kWh/gallon of chemical energy, so a gasoline engine makes about 11 kWh/gallon.
2. If you pay 20 cents per kWh then that equals $2.20/gallon-equivalent (just multiply your price per kWh by 11 to get gasoline gallon equivalent price) - if you're paying more than that for gasoline, it's cheaper to drive electric.
3. Battery capacity is indeed quite small, a 100kWh battery used in Teslas is one of the biggest, and that's ONLY equivalent to about a 10 gallon tank. And most batteries are 30-60Kwh... That's why everyone speaks in terms of miles of range.
4. From range and capacity, you can deduce equivalent MPG. One Tesla Model S declares 240 miles of range for a 70 kWh battery, that divides to 3.43 miles per kWh, or 37.7 MPG.
5. Early on, there was a lot of fear that battery degradation would bound the lifetime of EVs to about 5 years. We all have experiences with laptops and phones from the 2000s and 2010s which the batteries degraded to the point that they would not even hold 1 minute worth of charge. The good news is this fear turned out to be unfounded. Improved battery chemistries and active cooling has more or less solved this problem, and degradation in EVs is slow and well understood.
6. Not all EVs are alike. As with ICE vehicles, some are quite decent, others are best avoided. With ICE vehicles, there are well known disasters such as Wet Belts, CVT Transmissions, or the Hyundai Theta II engine. With EVs, the problem is less about catastrophic failure and more about oddball designs where replacement parts are rare and expensive, or are simply too difficult to work on. EVs are somewhat unique in that some of them were made in extremely small production runs and in that case, there are few in junk yards and repair parts are in short supply.
7. Not all EVs are alike. Every modern car is locked down to some extent in order to make it more difficult to repair. With EVs as with ICE cars, some of the more popular platforms have been reverse engineered and have a decent aftermarket. So every car platform has two variables: How anti-repair it is made from the factory, and how well has it been reverse-engineered. Tesla is very repair-hostile, but has a large community that has figured a lot of things out. The Nissan Leaf is a fair bit less hostile, and also has a large community and even has aftermarket / Frankenstein battery packs that some people build.
8. Not all EVs are alike. Big dumb touchscreens, and doors that don't open without electricity so you can't get out in a crash are not obligatory. Be smart.
9. The best EVs seem to be the ones which started being made a long time ago (plenty of time to work out the bugs), and are made in large number, by stable car companies w/o financial problems. Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan Leaf seem to be fairly good - do your own research of course.
10. Electric motors are more or less bulletproof, so in an EV, the only part that you really need to worry about is the battery pack. Most EV battery packs are removable (WARNING: NOT ALL). They are very heavy so you need jacks to get them out, but once they're out they can be repaired on a workbench.
11. You can usually buy second-hand batteries out of a junk yard (check this before buying a car!). This is the most common way batteries are swapped. You can also (depending on the car) go into the battery pack and do repairs or cell replacement. This is quite dangerous as you're dealing with a uniquely deadly combination of high voltage, and insanely high available amperage - and there's no way to "cut power" because inside of the battery IS the power. So some shops will be happy to swap batteries but unwilling to open them, even if the only thing that failed is a small relay.
10. If you're looking at used EVs, you want to know State of Health (SOH) and voltage difference between cells. Different voltage between cells is a sign of failing cells. If this isn't available in the on-board computer, take it to a shop that does EVs and have them pull the numbers before buying.
11. EV owners often do not charge to 100% because filling all the way degrades the battery faster. There is a setting in the onboard computer to make the car stop charging at 90% or 80%. There is LOTS of advice online about this, reality depends on your battery chemistry. Most EVs are NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries, some newer ones are LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate).
12. Battery fires are another problem that is more-or-less solved, UNLESS, you are in a serious accident that punctures the battery. NMC batteries are known to burn, LFP are much safer in that regard, new/experimental chemistries are being developed which will not burn at all but we're not there yet.
13. EVs do not wear out the same way as ICE vehicles (!!!!) In an ICE vehicle you look at the miles on the odometer to see how worn out it is. A 50 year old car with 20,000 miles is "brand new" as long as it lived its life in a garage. Batteries wear just from sitting, so calendar years on a battery matter, even if it was rarely ever driven in those years. On top of that, EVs from the earlier years had more teething issues, so newer models are often a better choice. In the case of the Leaf, pre-2016 models had a design flaw that cause excessive battery degradation, from 2016 through 2019 quality continuously improved, then after 2020 it became more variable with some QC issues popping up. This kind of "good years and bad years" thing is typical of all models, Do Your Research.

Slaves are a curse, they always have been. The benefit the slave holders at the cost of everyone else.
The real problem for a nation-state though is brain drain. You generally want to take care of all of your citizens by redistributing wealth away from the most productive to those in need - if you don't do that then you have elders starving etc.
But if you do that, and I start a state which welcomes foreigners with means and offers them zero tax, I might draw away your most productive citizens. This already happens with places like Poland, which is fairly well administered, but still the smartest and most productive polacks move to the US to make more money...
Also happens on a different scale with places like Malta, Singapore, Switzerland and (formerly) Dubai drawing away high-net-worths from their countries of origin.
Another version of this is China, hiring DRAM engineers away from Korea by offering them 10x their salary at home. They did this to bootstrap a home grown memory business...

1st class is "sufficiently racially/culturally homogenous that they will fight for each other". Families, tribes, whatever is required. The point is that they need to be this close.
They should also be the only ones voting or holding public office, because they're the only ones whose lives are on the line based on decisions of the state.
2nd class (families) can air grievances through their father/husband/son, and 3rd class are immigrants will flee if the state does not treat them well enough.
You want to get rid of the 3rd class entirely, I think a lot of people do, but countries which do that will struggle to be economically competitive because knowledge work requires migration of domain expertise. Think like El Salvador inviting American bitcoiners to go live there and start businesses... That's what we're talking about here, because everything exists in service to the 1st class.

If you don't like it because of the 3rd class, the problem with trying to remove that class is if you can't attract specialists then you won't have tech cities and you'll have a hard time competing... However, IMO only the first class needs to vote and serve in the government.

A major problem with world government is that everyone has to take what they're given -- and what if Putin wants more?
The obvious answer is to trick everyone else into thinking that you're going with the program, but then defect at the last minute and screw them after they've disarmed...
