I've actually noticed the opposite. The area I grew up in was pretty rough, but has been gentrified and cleaned up a lot over time. I do wonder how much this sense of things being more dangerous is a result of the media and social media ecosystems. I believe there's also a bit of data that suggests falling crime rates over time, even when it seems like the media is reporting so many "crime waves" etc. I'll have to do some more research.
