I think the world is definitely less safe than when we were young. I've seen decline first-hand where I live. When I moved here, it was low density - all houses bar 2 blocks of units in the street - and now it's high density - almost all houses gone, replaced by units and townhouses - and there's been a noticeable decline in the neighbourhood - more break-ins, more rubbish left lying around, etc.
