That's definitely good historical perspective to keep in mind! One thing I'll note is that in rural, pastoral settings, paganism and folklore continues to be a major part of the culture, in spite of/mingled in with Catholicism. So while the dominant culture remains unthreatened, an expectation of true conformity, I think (not a historian) is not quite as prevalent until, for instance, it becomes popular to hunt non-conformists, spurred by propaganda.
