Japan just gave Bitcoin what El Salvador never could, regulatory dignity.

Japan's parliament passed an amendment to the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act on 15 July 2026, reclassifying Bitcoin and 105+ cryptocurrencies as "financial assets" instead of "payment tools". Crypto now sits in the same regulatory bucket as stocks, bonds and derivatives.

Securities style laws now apply. Insider trading is banned. Annual issuer disclosures are mandatory. Penalties for unregistered operators are stricter.

The Financial Services Agency has been tasked with developing a framework for spot Bitcoin ETFs. Full enforcement lands in fiscal year 2027. That gives regulators breathing room to write rules before testing them.

Japan didn't call Bitcoin a security. It gave Bitcoin the dignity of one without the war over language that the SEC spent a decade fighting.

What's the first country that says "financial asset" AND cuts the tax on holding one?
