I have lived in the South of France and use the same principles as there. I batten down the hatches in the daytime, all windows, doors and blinds closed. At night, as soon as the outside temperature reduces to the temperature indoors I open them. There's usually a 7-10 degree difference. My house faces south and I have planted trees on that side for shade. I'm lucky also that my house is well insulated -that's also key.
