applications tend to want to work on all configurations, because otherwise you have to give completely ridiculous user instructions like "please enable this environment variable to run the application, and then on gnome you need to enable this other experimental feature all the entire screen will be unusably blurry". Calling that a "distro problem" is hugely dismissive of the user experience in reality.
