The vulnerability vs backdoor debate is very important narratively. If something is a backdoor, then the apparent solution is to avoid trusting people similar to the person who made the backdoor.

If something is a vulnerability then the apparent solution is to avoid trusting software similar to the software that had the vulnerability.

Of course, judging people's character is not a reliable strategy and all software has bugs, so even if any particular problem was a backdoor, it's still best to lower one's surface area and trust less software.

Most of the people screaming "backdoor"! In any given case are not going to be the ones who have some kind of evidence of malicious intent. They are going to be the ones who live in a fantasy world where they can substitute suspicion and personality judgements for critically evaluating software and lowering one's attack surface.
