Our DST would have zeroed in on big US tech giants like Google, Meta, Apple and Amazon, applying a 3% charge on revenue they earned in Canada above $20 million. It was supposed to start under Trudeau, and if Carney hadn't killed it, we would have collected $2 billion in back-taxes from these companies up front. The DST was popular in Canada; Carney's retreat on it was not well-receieved, and -- obviously, in hindsight -- gained Canada exactly nothing from Trump and his cronies in tariffs and trade negotiations.
