I spent 3+ weeks in Italy and landed in Rome during a heatwave—100 degrees in the shade. We managed by finding shade, taking breaks, and filling our bottles from Rome's public fountains.

That got me thinking about water purification. When water carried invisible pathogens, cities couldn't reliably grow without spreading disease. Clean water removed a basic constraint on human progress.

Fiat money creates a similar problem. Inflation erodes your purchasing power, while censorship, political manipulation, and counterparty exposure make the foundation less reliable. The damage changes how you save and what risks you must take.

So we build workarounds. Stocks, bonds, real estate, art, and other scarce assets can preserve purchasing power better than cash, but they add volatility, illiquidity, complexity, or ongoing management. They're useful, but they don't fix the money itself.

Bitcoin takes a different approach: fixed supply, no central issuer, and the ability to hold an asset without counterparty risk. Instead of helping you cope with contaminated money, it filters out the sources of contamination.

The full piece gives you a practical lens for deciding what belongs at the core of your savings: an asset that works around fiat's weaknesses, or one designed to remove them.
