yes. father in law went through this two years ago - the account was completely dead after the takeover - and he spent months trying to get it back. i assume the takeover involves replacing old email addresses/phone #'s with a chain of previous ones to push your wife's old info off the recovery stack/history.
in the end - he had to make a new account.
