🇺🇸 Former U.S. health official Anthony Fauci invoked the Fifth Amendment during a Republican-led Senate hearing on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, declining to answer questions on the advice of his attorneys.
Fauci said he was exercising his constitutional right because of what he described as Sen. Rand Paul's longstanding efforts to have him prosecuted, adding that the senator's recent release of his private writings, in which Fauci mused about his fame and the origins of COVID, reinforced his decision.
Despite Fauci's repeated invocation of the Fifth Amendment, Republican senators continued questioning him about NIH-funded research and the origins of COVID-19.
During the hearing, Paul's staff also had Fauci's attorney, David Schertler, escorted from the room after he repeatedly attempted to interject and invoke Fauci's Fifth Amendment rights on his client's behalf. Fauci stared straight ahead, repeatedly invoking his Fifth Amendment right.
