, I think the key point is to find backup maintainers. All my public projects have some — and I don't even mean people who will actually maintain the project, just people who will have access to pass it on if you're suddenly gone.
Then, in Python world you can technically reclaim a project name. Unfortunately, PyPA takes years to handle support requests (unless you happen to be their buddy), so things don't really work.
