I hung out with somebody for the first time 1-on-1 recently. We agreed twice to meet at 3pm. There are some events where showing up late makes sense, but this wasn’t one of them.
He rolls up at 3:35pm. I ask what happened to our agreement. He said people have been flaking and showing up late on him recently so he felt called to do it too.
It sort of blew my mind that a man would supposedly change his values based on the way other people are acting. I got bad vibes immediately.
My opinion: Instead of looking at how other people act, be the example of the change you wish to see. Don’t perpetuate the same behavior cycle you don’t like. Be impeccable with your word. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
