"Who was Primo Levi?
Primo Michele Levi was an Italian-Jewish chemist, anti-fascist resistance fighter, Holocaust survivor, and acclaimed author. Over the course of his career, he wrote a diverse body of work, including novels, memoirs, short story collections, essays, and poetry.
Primo Levi is best known for his powerful memoirs about surviving the Holocaust, but there was much more to him than his literary legacy. A chemist, thinker, and keen observer of human nature, Levi's life was filled with remarkable experiences that continue to fascinate readers today.
Born in Turin, Italy, in 1919, Levi earned a degree in chemistry despite facing anti-Jewish racial laws under Fascist Italy. He would later describe chemistry as a discipline that shaped both his scientific and literary thinking.
At Auschwitz, Levi's scientific training proved unexpectedly valuable. His knowledge of chemistry earned him work in a laboratory, sparing him from some of the harshest physical labour and increasing his chances of survival.
Even after gaining literary fame, Levi did not immediately become a full-time writer. He spent years working in a paint and chemical factory, often writing in the evenings and on weekends.
Before his arrest, Levi joined a small anti-Fascist resistance group in northern Italy. Captured in 1943, he was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp, an experience that would define much of his later writing.
Many readers know Levi for *If This Is a Man*, but few realize he also wrote imaginative science fiction and speculative stories. Collections such as *Natural Histories* explored technology, ethics, and human behaviour with wit and originality."
