Texas biotechnology company Colossal Biosciences wants to bring back the bluebuck from extinction. The project’s significance may extend far beyond reviving the long-lost species, said to have sported a blue-grey hide.

The most revealing part of James’ interview with Daily Maverick may be that the bluebuck and ambassador species like it do not necessarily represent the company’s ultimate objective.
'We’re interested in investing this amount of money not because of the resulting animal alone,' James says. 'We’re also interested in rapid development of tech that helps bring that moonshot to life. That tech then is directly applicable to species on the brink of extinction today.'
With this, James reframes Colossal’s pitch.
Rather than simply trying to recreate an extinct animal, Colossal says 'de-extinction' is a platform for new conservation technologies – an approach the company contends could eventually help threatened species teetering on the edge of the extinction abyss."

"Orcas Are Sinking Boats in Spain Again
Orcas hate boats. Well, the ones in Spain do, at least. Last week, a pod of the ocean mammals disabled, damaged, and destroyed a number of vessels – the latest in a long-running feud between cetaceans and watercraft.
The trouble started Thursday when, as Spanish news outlet SUR reports, four craft were targeted. Around 5 p.m., the yacht Idem was attacked just over a mile off Estaca de Bares, located at the northernmost point of Spain. The craft’s rudder was destroyed and it began to sink, prompting a rescue of the two people onboard (who escaped from the ordeal unharmed). According to mayor Alfredo Dovale, a private boat attempted to tow the yacht to shore, but was unable to recover it before it sank.
However, that was not the end of it. 'While assisting the yacht Idem, it emerged another sailing vessel had also experienced an interaction with these marine mammals, but the damage to its rudder was minimal and it continued sailing to Viveiro,' added the Spanish Coast Guard. Another craft had its rudder rendered inoperable, and a third was attacked, but didn’t receive any significant damage.
The orcas struck again the following day, this time smashing the rudder of a 14-meter Swedish-flagged vessel named Vai. A Spanish coastguard vessel responded to a mayday call from the yacht and towed it to nearby Viveiro.
This is merely the latest in a long string of orca attacks, spanning years. Since 2020, killer whales have regularly accosted boats around the Iberian Peninsula, with hundreds of attacks reported each year. There are various theories as to exactly why they have taken to doing this, with some theorizing the behavior is revenge for a vessel strike, while others characterize the attacks as 'play behavior.'"

The administration will now apparently 'prioritize the rapid identification and neutralization of violent secular political groups whose ideology is anti-American, radically pro-transgender, and anarchist.'
In a bizarre but familiar turn, the document also blames transgender people for the shooting of Charlie Kirk. 'Americans have witnessed the politically motivated killings of Christians and conservatives committed by violent left-wing extremists, including the assassination of Charlie Kirk by a radical who espoused extreme transgender ideologies.'

"Deepfakes Are Coming for Your Bank Account
OpenAI made the perfect tool for scammers.
Donald Trump is on TikTok doing his morning routine. 'Get ready with me for a big day 💄🇺🇸,' reads the caption, as the president holds a makeup brush to his cheek. The scene is a still, ostensibly a screenshot of a TikTok clip. Like so much other AI-generated slop coursing through the internet, the image is fake and ridiculous. It also looks unnervingly real: There are no hands with six fingers, physics-defying angles, or other flagrant signs of AI-generated imagery. At quick glance, it really looks like the president is putting on bronzer.
I made this deepfake with OpenAI’s new image-generation model. ChatGPT Images 2.0, released last week, can create photorealistic visuals that are noticeably more convincing than what its predecessors might have produced. The tool has flooded the internet with hyperreal fakes: for example, Jeffrey Epstein as a Twitch streamer. I created the 'screenshot' of Trump’s fake TikTok after encountering a similar image on the ChatGPT subreddit, and I’ve since been able to use Images 2.0 to create all kinds of alarming deepfake images—including of Elon Musk getting whisked away by the FBI, world leaders suffering medical emergencies, and top American politicians donning Nazi paraphernalia (none of which I’ve shared anywhere)."

Dana saw an opportunity. Smoke-ins became a common and useful political tactic. It exposed people to the ease and pleasure of scofflawry, which proved to be both politically consciousness raising and psycho-socially bonding experience. It also spread weed culture and weed itself. This lead after many years of persecution eventually lead to legalization in more states every year.
I never put any more real effort into the legalization movement than getting some people high and letting them keep me abreast of developments. I don't care if something is illegal. I don't take orders from the state. Also, in a world of ubiquitous capitalism, malicious oligarchy, burgeoning fascism and very real and pressing threats to the biosphere itself, I can't waste my limited organizing time on symbolic reforms. I'm glad somebody does though because now, for the first time in my life, I no longer have to fear the police when my personal drug of choice in my possession.

Under a bill that may soon pass the Legislature, California medical providers and affiliated businesses could face hefty state fines if they comply with a federal subpoena seeking abortion, gender-affirming or reproductive care information without first notifying the California attorney general, patients and providers.
But delaying responding to the feds could put them at risk of violating federal law, and independent constitutional scholars say the pending law might not survive a legal challenge.

As it’s currently imagined, the technology promises to concentrate wealth and disempower workers. Is an alternative possible?

When we talk about artificial intelligence, we rely on metaphor, as we always do when dealing with something new and unfamiliar. Metaphors are, by their nature, imperfect, but we still need to choose them carefully, because bad ones can lead us astray. For example, it’s become very common to compare powerful A.I.s to genies in fairy tales. The metaphor is meant to highlight the difficulty of making powerful entities obey your commands; the computer scientist Stuart Russell has cited the parable of King Midas, who demanded that everything he touched turn into gold, to illustrate the dangers of an A.I. doing what you tell it to do instead of what you want it to do. There are multiple problems with this metaphor, but one of them is that it derives the wrong lessons from the tale to which it refers. The point of the Midas parable is that greed will destroy you, and that the pursuit of wealth will cost you everything that is truly important. If your reading of the parable is that, when you are granted a wish by the gods, you should phrase your wish very, very carefully, then you have missed the point.
So, I would like to propose another metaphor for the risks of artificial intelligence. I suggest that we think about A.I. as a management-consulting firm, along the lines of McKinsey & Company. Firms like McKinsey are hired for a wide variety of reasons, and A.I. systems are used for many reasons, too. But the similarities between McKinsey—a consulting firm that works with ninety per cent of the Fortune 100—and A.I. are also clear. Social-media companies use machine learning to keep users glued to their feeds. In a similar way, Purdue Pharma used McKinsey to figure out how to 'turbocharge' sales of OxyContin during the opioid epidemic. Just as A.I. promises to offer managers a cheap replacement for human workers, so McKinsey and similar firms helped normalize the practice of mass layoffs as a way of increasing stock prices and executive compensation, contributing to the destruction of the middle class in America.
A former McKinsey employee has described the company as 'capital’s willing executioners': if you want something done but don’t want to get your hands dirty, McKinsey will do it for you. That escape from accountability is one of the most valuable services that management consultancies provide. Bosses have certain goals, but don’t want to be blamed for doing what’s necessary to achieve those goals; by hiring consultants, management can say that they were just following independent, expert advice. Even in its current rudimentary form, A.I. has become a way for a company to evade responsibility by saying that it’s just doing what 'the algorithm' says, even though it was the company that commissioned the algorithm in the first place.
The question we should be asking is: as A.I. becomes more powerful and flexible, is there any way to keep it from being another version of McKinsey?"

Black Sabbath was playing on the stereo. Incense hung in the air.

I recently engaged in a conversation with a man who was trying to convince his readers the #patriarchy has *always* been the natural state of the human species. This is patently false. Neither is patriarchy built into our genes.
"Always"!?! Oh, please. Anatomically modern humans have been around for at least 300,000 years. Patriarchy is, at most, 4-5,000 years old. It's not universal, ubiquitous, or omnipresent. It's not genetic. It's an aberration in the human story.
The belief that genes determine group behaviors is pure eugenics. It is the essence of Nazi ideology. People who think like that are thinking like Nazis.
Patriarchy is behavior. All culture is behavior. Behavior can change. Culture can change. One way we can tell is archeology. For example, we can study their graves. How people are buried can tell us a lot about how they lived.
Before the Steppe Culture expanded out of what's now Ukraine and into Europe and South Asia, burials were conducted much differently. Let's look at Europe because of the abundance of data available. When Steppe Culture met what Marija Gimbutas called "Old Europe" they slaughtered most of the males and, in most places, just took over. This *is* written in our genes. At this point in the story, burial customs shifted dramatically.
Prior to then, European burials were communal, with little or no individual grave goods. This implies a more or less egalitarian culture. Then the Steppe people imported their custom of exalting certain individuals by entombing them in kurgans, often with grave goods that included weaponry. This implies hierarchy.
The patriarchal bias of European archeologists assigned maleness to these skeletons, solely of the basis of their martial grave goods, without the advantage of modern paleogenetic technology or, often without even measuring the width of their pelvises. If they are armed, they must be male is how the thinking went.
The technology driven rise of paleogenetic science is discrediting this bogus analysis. Archeologists have had to begin to reconsider gender roles throughout human history.
While the luxurious grave goods clearly indicate persons of standing, graves with weaponry weren't all luxurious, they weren't all leaders, and they weren't all male. Many were what we'd call common soldiers. Some, in some contexts many, of them were women.
Women have fought since time immemorial. For example, the Scythian peoples (Tomyris's Massagetae, etc.) were famous for their coed cavalry. They are probably the kernel of truth behind the Amazons of Greek mythology and the valkyries of Norse mythology.
A female archer on horseback had a distinct advantage over male equestrians. They're lighter, so they can ride faster and turn sharper while riding on comparable horses. They were a formidable fighting force.
Not all women have been warriors. Most have not. Neither have most men. But as the central aphorism of anthropology clearly states, any behavior not universal is not human nature, it's cultural, idiosyncratic, or both. There are a lot of exceptions to the "only males fight" paradigm. Even today the Kurdish Women's Protection Units (YPJ) and the Bethnahrain Women's Protection Forces (an Assyrian all-female brigade of the Syriac Military Council) that they inspired, have a recent history of kicking ISIS's butt. Tradwives they are not. "Submissive"? Oh, please.
And so on. To summarize, the absurd notion that the fate of women has *always* been in the hands of men needs to be discarded. As for its believers, I take their reliance on ad hominem, rudeness and vulgarity to defend their position as proof positive of their beliefs themselves lack of worth. What they themselves are worth is a matter of opinion. I personally fail to see any worth at all in men like that. I'm not the only one.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe they can change. After all, behavior is cultural and behavior can change. If any Mastodonians want to try, be my guest. I don't hold out too much hope, but hope dies last.
You try to change their minds, not me. I'm ill equipped. I'm far too reactive. Just listening to this crap raises my blood pressure. It's already high enough that I take medication for it. My diet and exercise regimen can't be at fault. I'm pretty good about that stuff. I blame it on the stress of living in late stage capitalism, especially the cruel and unusual crap we find on social media. And patriarchy and its results. The results of patriarchy are abominable. War is the worst of them but there's more. Domestic violence comes from the same source. So does bullying. So does our foolish and deplorable tendency to just believe anything the ranking males say without first applying critical fact checking.
I've done my best to convince these people that they're wrong. I've failed. Now it's your turn. If you have what it takes, please engage with these people. We will never yeet patriarchy from the human story until we understand it and we will never understand it until we are extremely clear on its etiology. Short version: it is *not* genetic.
The role of patriarchy in the problems and failures of modern civilization is an important subject. It should be discussed. But not by me, not with people who insult me and put words in my mouth. That stuff belongs on #xitter not on Mastodon, and not in my timeline. I muted the whole conversation.
But if you're interested in that sort of thing, check it out. Just ignore the ad hominems, vulgarity, tone policing and general rudeness. They are off topic and thus irrelevant. Bypass them. Cut to the chase.

People have long said that in prehistoric foraging societies, labor was divided by gender: Women gathered and men hunted. But now, a new study adds to the growing body of work challenging this idea, suggesting that prehistoric women were just as skilled at killing game as men were.
'We’ve had scattered reports here and there about women’s hunting,’ Vivek Venkataraman, an evolutionary anthropologist at the University of Calgary in Canada who was not involved with the research, tells Science’s Bridget Alex. But the new research 'pulls a lot of these things together.'
In the paper, published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE, a team of international researchers identified 391 foraging societies across the world, from the 1800s to present day. (Scientists use modern foraging societies as a window into past human behavior, reports NPR’s Nurith Aizenman.) Of these, they obtained data on hunting from 63 societies.
'We were reading papers written by people who had lived with these groups and had studied their behavior,’ study co-author Cara Wall-Scheffler, a professor and co-chair of biology at Seattle Pacific University, tells Live Science’s Jennifer Nalewicki. 'They were looking at people and recording what they did.'
Their analysis revealed that regardless of maternal status, women hunted in 50 of these societies—or about 79 percent. And more than 70 percent of female hunting appeared to be intentional—rather than opportunistically killing animals while doing other activities, per the study. In societies where hunting was the most important activity for subsistence, women participated in hunting 100 percent of the time.
'The hunting was purposeful,‘ Wall-Scheffler tells NPR. 'Women had their own tool kit. They had favorite weapons. Grandmas were the best hunters of the village.'
The researchers also found that women played an active role in teaching hunting, and they used a wider variety of weapons and hunting strategies than men did. For example, while men tended to hunt alone or in pairs, women hunted alone, with a man or with groups of women, children or dogs. Women hunted small game in 46 percent of the studied societies and took down medium or large game in 48 percent of them. In 4 percent of societies, they hunted game of all sizes.
While previous research has found that women may have rivaled males when it came to taking down big game, historically, scientists have dismissed females’ hunting prowess, possibly because of researcher bias, per the paper. But recent studies have increasingly shown women as hunters: In the Americas, a 2020 study found that females likely represented up to 50 percent of prehistoric big game hunters, suggesting the practice was gender neutral.
And the remains of women, like men, have been discovered buried alongside hunting weapons. Yet, while researchers presume stone projectiles found buried with men are hunting tools, they are “'ess persuaded when projectiles are associated with females,' per the new paper.
Wall-Scheffler tells NPR that stories of gender differences in our ancestors have percolated into our society today, which can lead people to assume dividing labor based on gender is a more natural way to live.
‘It can be damaging,’ Nurith Aizenman reports for NPR. ‘They use that to argue that gender roles should be more rigid today.’"

The latest Yellowstone Resources and Issues Handbook lacks climate change section for the first time in nearly two decades.
Yellowstone National Park visitors over the past few years have been asking park guide Leo Leckie why some Douglas-fir trees between Mammoth Hot Springs and Tower junction are turning red. Their change in color was clearly visible, but the cause wasn’t as apparent.
'You could see the rust-like color on the trees where you never saw that before,' said Leckie, who works for Gardiner-based tour company Yellowstone Wolf Tracker.
Leckie turned to the Yellowstone Resources and Issues Handbook, a compendium of Yellowstone information published annually by the National Park Service. He learned that bark beetles are attacking the trees, and that a warming climate is likely making their assaults more frequent and more severe. 'The resource handbook is always on hand, said Leckie, who has worked in the park since 2010. 'It is the tool that I refer to when clients inevitably ask a question that I can’t answer.'
Last year, the entry that linked beetle infestation to warmer, drier weather disappeared, along with the entire 13-page climate change section. For the first time in nearly 20 years, the handbook does not feature a single chapter dedicated to climate change. The omission occurred as the Trump administration has pressured national parks around the country to remove information on climate change, slavery and the mistreatment of Native Americans."

"Study on Alt-Med Breast Cancer Treatments Finds a Grim Side Effect: Death
Over a five-year span, women who used complementary and alternative medicine had a greater mortality rate than those who relied on traditional care.
Cancer treatment is often a difficult process, thanks in no small part to the many side effects it can cause. A study out this week, however, shows the perils of relying on less conventional remedies instead.
Researchers at Yale University examined the outcomes of more than two million women with breast cancer. Women who used complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) had a substantially greater risk of dying over a five year span compared to women taking traditional treatment, they found—even if they used both at the same time. On the positive side, though, most patients stuck with mainstream medicine.

There are many different forms of alternative medicine, some less risky than others (meditation, for instance) Yet other treatments aren’t so benign and can come with serious, even potentially fatal, side effects, such as the improper use of chelation therapy. And even the simple act of delaying or avoiding conventional care in favor of ineffective alternative remedies can prove dangerous.
A 2018 study found that cancer patients who reported only using alternative medicine had a greater mortality rate than people on mainstream cancer treatments. The current researchers wanted to specifically examine CAM use among breast cancer patients, though, using more updated information. So they analyzed data from the National Cancer Database on women in the U.S. diagnosed with breast cancer between 2011 and 2021.
All told, 97.6% of women reported only using traditional treatment; 2.3% of women reported using no treatment at all; and less than 0.1% reported using CAM alone or CAM plus traditional treatment.
Unsurprisingly, compared to traditional treatment, women who abstained from any treatment fared worse—but those on CAM didn’t do much better. After adjusting for other factors, CAM-only users had a more than threefold higher risk of dying in the five years after diagnosis than traditional patients."

"A massive public archive of declassified US government files vanished just one day after President Trump ordered the release of all UFO-related documents.
The Black Vault, run by researcher and ufologist John Greenewald Jr, had its main server reportedly wiped clean on February 20, deleting hundreds of gigabytes worth of files on UFOs, declassified CIA projects, and major conspiracies, including the assassination of JFK.
Greenewald shared the news online, explaining that some server directories had their permissions, the safeguards on who can access or edit them, and the file ownership logs changed without explanation.

In simpler terms, someone or something intentionally removed every single file from the Black Vault's server, deleting all the records released by the CIA and other groups, without fully shutting down the site so alarms wouldn't go off right away.
Until recently, the US government has flat-out denied that UFOs or extraterrestrial beings existed, maintaining for decades that there has never been any physical evidence recovered that proves something non-human has ever landed on Earth.
However, Trump's February 19 order came after he publicly criticized former President Barack Obama for saying in an interview that aliens were real. Trump claimed the 44th president had revealed 'classified information.'
Greenewald has previously filed over 11,000 FOIA requests with the US government to obtain these documents, including some declassified reports that date back to the alleged UFO crash landing at Roswell in 1947.
His investigations have also provided legitimate paper trails, detailing how former administrations and the intelligence community created secret task forces of high-ranking military and scientific officials to research UFO incidents.
Luckily for The Black Vault, Greenewald revealed that all of the more than 3.8 million files were backed up in secure locations and the site was restored soon after the mysterious wiping took place.

"St. Peter police chief intervenes, prevents federal agents from arresting resident
MPR News has learned that the police chief in the small southern Minnesota city of St. Peter intervened Thursday afternoon to prevent federal immigration agents from arresting a local resident.
The resident, a woman, had been observing and recording video of immigration enforcement actions from her car when agents removed her from her car and took her into custody.
It's believed to be the first time a local police department in Minnesota intervened in a federal law enforcement action since the surge in immigration enforcement began two months ago.
The woman, who did not want to be identified because she fears for her safety, is a U.S. citizen and a resident of St. Peter. She told MPR News in an interview that she was out in the community in her car, tracking the movements of federal agents, and recording them on a dash cam.
She shared that video with us. Agents in three vehicles began chasing her and trying to force her to pull over. Eventually they box her in, three agents get out of the car in front of her, with their guns drawn and try to force her out of her vehicle.
'Get out of the car! Get out of the car,' the agents scream at her repeatedly, while she calmly responds, 'No. I will not get out of the car.'
While she's alone in the car, the woman can be heard talking with other observers on speaker phone and she tells them to call 911. The agents open the door, which unlocked automatically when she put the gearshift in park, they drag her out and force her to the ground. She said the agents were overly aggressive and physical as they pinned her down and handcuffed her, leaving her with multiple cuts, scrapes and bruises.
The woman’s husband eventually arrives and tries to intervene, and he made a separate recording of the interaction on his phone. He tells the agents not to search her car because they don't have a warrant and it would be an illegal search. The agents appear dismissive of his constitutional concerns.
'I'm not getting into the legality of everything,' One agent responds tersely.
MPR News interviewed the woman and her husband, who also doesn't want to be identified, fearing retaliation.
The woman said the agents put her into one of their vehicles and started driving toward the Twin Cities, presumably to the Whipple Federal Building near MSP Airport, where ICE has an immigration detention facility. About 20 minutes into the drive, when they were near Le Sueur, she says one of the agents got a call, apparently from an ICE supervisor. They turned off Highway 169 at the next exit and drove back toward St. Peter.
The husband told MPR News that after his wife was taken into custody, he called his attorney, and soon after, he got a call from St. Peter Chief of Police Matt Grochow, whom he said he has known for years.
I was talking to him, kind of venting some of my frustrations,' the man said, adding that he urged the chief to have his officers just be more visible during the federal enforcement actions. 'If [local police] were present and they could see you, I promise you their behavior more than likely, or hopefully, would, you know, be appropriate and law abiding.'
The husband says he talked to the chief for a while and 'we had a good conversation.
He asked me, ‘what was your wife's name’? I told him my wife's name. He said, ‘was she picked up in a bronco?’ And I said, ‘I'm not sure, but it was an SUV, dark colored. I'd have to look at my video.’ He goes, ‘I think I got her. I'll call you back’.'
The husband said a few minutes later, the chief called again, 'and said, I got her or I'm bringing her home.'
'I was just so relieved that she got released and was able to come home,' he said.
The agents took the woman to the St. Peter police station, where she says Chief Grochow approached her, spoke with her, had her get into his squad car, and took her home.
'He knew where I lived already, because he had already been in contact with my husband.' the woman said. 'He started talking to me like he just couldn't [believe] how terrible it was, what was happening. And he was so sorry and so scared for me and that type of thing, and [he] was so upset by what they're doing to our community.'
In an email to MPR News, Chief Grochow confirmed that ICE agents turned the woman over to him and he then drove the woman home.
'ICE returned the female to our police department, I saw her, and I gave her a ride home,' Grochow wrote."
