Nearly seven thousand stone towers like this one are scattered across a single Mediterranean island, and the people who built them left no writing behind to explain why.
Su Nuraxi di Barumini rises from the Sardinian countryside in Italy, a Bronze Age nuraghe whose central tower was raised around the 17th century BCE and originally stood some 18 meters tall, built entirely from dry-stacked basalt boulders with not a trace of mortar holding it together.
Nuragic builders corbelled the tower into shape, laying each ring of massive stones slightly further inward than the ring below until the walls curved into a false dome at the top, the same load-bearing trick used in far smaller structures elsewhere in the ancient world but rarely attempted at this scale or in these numbers.
Four smaller corner towers surround the central keep, linked by thick defensive walls around a crescent-shaped courtyard that hides a well sunk 20 meters into the bedrock, with a full village of stone huts excavated around the complex, inhabited from roughly the 13th to the 6th century BCE.
The Nuragic civilization that built all of this, estimated to have raised close to seven thousand of these towers across Sardinia, used no script that has ever been deciphered, so almost everything historians know about why they built so many comes from the stones themselves rather than a single surviving word from the people who stacked them.
