He's right. When a person interacts with others, they learn the words to describe their own virtues. But in isolation, they are forced to rely on non-descriptive crutches like "intelligence" to refer to their own traits. "Intelligence" in practice is a stand-in word that people are foced to use as a consequence their own lacking vocabulary and self awareness.
