Pondering on this I think it shows how it’s easy to see why national politicians bend to suit a perceived majority when in fact they are dealing with a vocal minority.
People motivated to engage local politicians are probably more politically engaged, and here it’s a small town with a significant elderly population. Targeting policies/statements on just those people could well further alienate or turn off others.
