I learned a new word today: patrimonialism. It means, “A system of social organization or government in which a male leader maintains authority through individuals with loyalty to him personally.”

I encountered it in a February article in the Atlantic: “One Word Describes #Trump”.

The article references a book by Hanson and Kopstein, “The Assault On The State / How The Global Attack On Modern Government Endangers Our Future”.
