I don't think we skipped it. There are many web UIs for this stuff, and the best ones were originally chat interfaces.
The letdown for me is that they have to be hosted somewhere, and they have to have reasonable access, which isn't always feasible.
For you and me to host our own OpenCode server is fine, but for the average person, they don't have the skills to do it. Tailscale is wonderful, but a really hard topic to cover with someone who is new to everything.
