I've legit seen a case where an article knowingly contained a false statement for years due to this. There was a brief discussion on the talk page indicating that it was known, but there were only primary sources with the correct information, so they simply left the misinformation in the article for years.
IIRC it was about who coined the term "Open Source" ... Not the most important thing but still.
