Explanation: when the BS sends down a PDU to an MS that invites some sort of immediate response, automatically grant a slot along with that PDU’s downlink resource so the MS has an immediate uncontended opportunity to send that response. Typically this is to support the LLC’s basic link acknowledgments (a bit like TCP ACKs) but also helps in some other situations where there is a quick BS-initiated exchange of PDUs. Without this mechanism, MSs would have to go through the random access procedure every time.
