OK, thanks. That second click is unfortunate as it's unnecessary. The way both Mac/Win does it is more elegant as it doesn't require a setting and all use cases are covered. From all the discussion I've had today, this is likely driven by restrictive Window/Toolkit APIs, not a well reasoned UX design.
I realize this unlikely to change any time soon so I'll manage my expectations, but it's frustrating that some Linux DE UX is driven by technical constraints like this
