Talking to my boss, a Nepali, about the history of language and why English is so hard to parse. I say the line "yeah, English has been colonized at least 4 times in history. The Norse, Germanics, the Romans, and the French twice."
He balked, "You mean the English colonized."
"Well, yes eventually we get to that point, but first they were taken over and put in subservience many times."
He could not understand.
