Fun fact
I have personally solved 3 Monero blocks (p2pool mining of course)
A home miner can be a poor investment and still be worth owning, but only if you’re clear about the job you’re hiring it to do.

My Bitaxe produces 0.5–1 TH/s against a bitcoin network that had reached 1 zetahash when I ran the numbers. Solo, my chance of finding a block was about 1 in 5 million each day, or one expected block every 15,000 years. At those odds, solo mining belongs in the budget as a lottery-like hobby, not an income strategy.

The device draws about 10–15 watts, though, and its value doesn’t have to come from winning a block. It offers a hands-on way to learn how mining works, experiment with open-source software, and participate directly in bitcoin’s network without asking an intermediary for access.

Before buying a home miner, choose the goal. If you want a learning project or a small act of permissionless participation, a Bitaxe can fit. If you want a steadier stream of BTC, point your hashrate at a pool. If you want the best expected financial return, compare the hardware and electricity costs with buying bitcoin.

Rare solo blocks make great stories, but they shouldn’t decide what the machine is for. A clear purpose lets you enjoy the experiment without pretending a long-shot payout is part of your financial independence plan.
