It's cult-like mentality, once they buy into it then they isolate and purity test their "community" to keep them in line whilst performatively appearing more virtuous to their peers. It's also made worse when the focus of the cult is a mental disorder... And then it's made even worse when a portion of that cult has been rendered infertile (among many other permanent side effects) through drugs/surgery and have fewer options for the rest of their life if the cult's messaging was incorrect..

Not many of them can stop now though, they've endorsed too many evils so they must pretend that it's all still good to their dying breaths. Most people are incapable of accepting that they're the villains in their own stories.
